Griffins Knock off Division I St Francis (PA)

The Griffin women's basketball team took a break from Division II play and made the short trip to Loretto, PA for an exhibition contest with St Francis (PA) on Tuesday morning. 

Seton Hill rallied from as many as twelve down in the third quarter for an 83-78 victory over the Red Flash. 

The teams exchanged baskets in the early portion of the first quarter before Courtney Cecere hit a three to trim the Flash lead to 12-11 midway thru the quarter.  The Red Flash was able to take a 25-17 lead into the second quarter. 

Midway thru the second quarter, St Francis built their lead to 38-25.  A jumper from Tiana Stewart and two free throws from Lexi Civittolo trimmed the lead to 38-29.  Three pointers from Stewart and Cheyenne Trest cut the lead to six late in the half.  St Francis took a 46-40 lead into the halftime break. 

A three point play from Trest and a basket from Katie Nolan early in the third quarter cut the lead to 48-45.  The Red Flash answered with a 9-0 run to push their lead to back to 57-45 with 4:14 to play in the third.  A quick 7-0 run from the Griffins, the last three on a Civittolo three cut the lead back to 57-52.  St Francis led 63-56 heading to the fourth quarter. 

Two quick baskets from St Francis pushed the lead back to 67-56 early in the fourth.  Over the next 4:21 the Griffins went on a 13-0 run to take a 69-67 lead midway thru the quarter.  Back to back three pointers from Nolan and Civittolo extended the lead to 75-71 with 3:21 to play.  Cecere drained a three and Nolan added another layin to increase the lead to 80-74 with 1:16 to play.  The Griffins closed out the game hitting free throws to earn the win. 

Nolan paced the Griffins with a game high 19 points.  Civittolo added 17 points and Cecere tossed in 16.  Both Trest and Stewart each reached double figures with 11 points. 

SHU will next play their home opener on Saturday afternoon against Malone at 4 PM.
