The Griffins began PSAC West play on Wednesday evening with a road contest at Slippery Rock. The Rock outscored the Griffins 15-11 in overtime for a 71-67 win. SHU is now 2-9 overall and 0-5 in PSAC play.
The Rock opened the game on a 10-4 run as the game went into the first media timeout. Both teams just scored two points in the next four minute stretch as the Rock led 12-6 at the under 12 media timeout.
Milenko Predic had four of the six Griffins points.
Six straight points from
Nathan Davis cut the Slippery Rock lead to 16-14 with 7:58 to play in the first half. The Griffins took their first of the game at 20-18 on a layin from
Trevor Blondin with 4:50 to play in the half. Two free throws from
Nathan Davis gave SHU a 22-20 lead with 37 seconds to play. A Rock basket tied the score at 22 at the half. Davis led the Griffins with 12 points.
A four point play from Davis opened the second half as SHU took a 26-22 lead. The game was tied at 30 at the first media timeout of the half. Back to back three pointers from Blondin and Davis gave SHU a 36-30 lead. Another three from Blondin extended the lead to 40-34 with 12:15 to go.
The Rock battled back to take a 43-42 lead before
Jacob Payne gave the Griffins the lead back with a basket just before the under eight media timeout. A three pointer from Blondin and another one from
Kealen Coats extended the lead to 54-49 with 3:35 to play.
Slippery Rock used a 5-0 run to tie the score at 54 with 1:34 to play. Predic hit a jumper with 18 seconds left but the Rock answered with a basket to send the game to overtime tied at 56.
Both teams were hot from the floor in the start of the overtime period. Blondin drained two threes and
Brandon Alston hit another as SHU led 67-66 with 1:45 to go in overtime. The Rock hit a three to take a 69-67 lead with 43 seconds to go. Two Griffin turnovers led two two Rock free throws as they escaped with a 71-67 win.
Trevor Blondin led the Griffins with 25 points.
Nathan Davis added 21 points.
Milenko Predic also reached double figures with 10 points
SHU will return to action on Saturday when they host Edinboro at 3 PM.
