The Griffins men's basketball team opened the 2018-19 season with a matchup with Glenville State at the PSAC/MEC Challenge in Charleston, WV. Glenville State led by seven points at the half and carried that lead to the end in a 100-93 victory over the Griffins.
Glenville took an early 9-2 lead just four minutes into the contest. SHU responded to take its largest lead of the game at 12-9 following a 10-0 run over a four minute stretch. Glenville retook the lead with a 7-0 run that gave them a 22-16 lead with just over 11 minutes to play in the first half. The Glenville lead grew to as many as 13 in the half before the Pioneers settled for a 47-40 halftime lead.
Trevor Blondin paced the Griffins with 12 points.
Nathan Davis had 11 in the half. Both teams shot well from the field with both shooting 44%. The Griffins held a 23-19 rebounding advantage.
In the second half, the Griffins were able to trim the Pioneer lead to five points three times in the first five minutes but the Pioneers built their lead back to 12 with 14 minutes to play in the half. A three pointer from Davis trimmed the lead to six with 7:38 to play. Over the next two and a half minutes the Pioneers were able to double their lead to 12 points. The Griffins got back to within five late but could not get any closer.
Davis led the Griffins with a double double performance of 30 points and 10 rebounds. Blondin finished the contest with 22 points.
Malik McKinney reached double figures with 15 in his first collegiate contest.
Julian Boykins just missed double figures with 9 points.
The Griffins return to action on Saturday when they meet the host Charleston (WV).
