SHU Drops PSAC Road Contest at Mercyhurst

After starting the game down, 9-0, the Griffins responded to take a 46-45 lead in the second half, only to see Mercyhurst retake the lead and earn a PSAC West win on Wednesday afternoon.  The Lakers defeated the Griffins by a 69-63 score, sending the Griffins to a 5-10 overall record and a 2-8 mark in PSAC action.

Mercyhurst opened the game with a 9-0 lead.  Trevor Blondin hit the first Griffin field goal of the game, a three pointer, at the 16:41 mark of the half.  The Lakers led 16-8 with 13:22 to play before SHU went on a 7-0 run to cut the lead to 16-15 with just over 11 minutes to play in the half.  Blondin scored five of the seven points during the run.  Back to back three pointers from Nathan Davis and Anthony Karabatsos gave the Griffins their first lead of the game, 21-20, with 8:43 to play in the half.  The Lakers took a 26-21 lead but three free throws from Trevor Lecuona and a basket from Milenko Predic tied the score at 26 with just over six minutes remaining in the half.  Mercyhurst closed the half on a 9-3 run to take a 35-29 advantage into the halftime break.

Blondin opened the second half with a three pointer and Spencer Casson hit four free throws as the Griffins battled back to tie the score at 38 early in the second half.  Matt Kline hit a three pointer with just over twelve minutes to play to give the Griffins their final lead of the game at 46-45.  Over the next three minutes, the Lakers outscored the Griffins 8-0.  Four points from Blondin got the Griffins back to within three points but that would be as close as the Griffins would get the rest of the way.

Blondin was the lone Griffin in double figures with a game high 26 points.  Davis finished the game with 8 points.  Karabatsos added 7 points.  Casson and Lecuona each added 6 points.

The Griffins return home on Saturday when they host California (PA) in a PSAC West contest at 3 PM.
