The duo of
Molly Childress and
Maia Cheeks led the Griffins to an easy 5-1 win over Converse on Friday afternoon at Dick's Sporting Goods Field. Each player scored twice in the win. SHU is now 3-6 on the season.
The Griffins got on the scoreboard quickly with Cheeks scoring her first of the game just 3:43 into the contest. Cheeks deflected an
Ashley Curnow shot off a penalty corner to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead. Less than six minutes later Childress deflected a Cheeks shot into the net for a 2-0 Griffin lead.
With less than nine minutes remaining in the first half, the Griffins extended their lead to 3-0. Cheeks scored her second of the game. This time she deflected a shot from
Wynnsome Gadson to give the Griffins a 3-0 lead at the break.
Just over three minutes into the second half,
Zyah Newsome scored her first collegiate goal to push the Griffins lead to 4-0. Childress and
Caitlin Bray executed a perfect give and go with Childress going one on one with the keeper and finding the back of the net for a 5-0 Griffin lead. Converse scored a late goal for the 5-1 final.
Jane Eberhardt and
Elizabeth Armbruster split the game in cage. Armbruster allowed 1 goal and made three saves.
SHU returns to PSAC play on Saturday morning when they host West Chester at 11 AM.
