Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Cheeks, Childress Lead Griffins to Win

The duo of Molly Childress and Maia Cheeks led the Griffins to an easy 5-1 win over Converse on Friday afternoon at Dick's Sporting Goods Field.  Each player scored twice in the win.  SHU is now 3-6 on the season.

The Griffins got on the scoreboard quickly with Cheeks scoring her first of the game just 3:43 into the contest.  Cheeks deflected an Ashley Curnow shot off a penalty corner to give the Griffins a 1-0 lead.  Less than six minutes later Childress deflected a Cheeks shot into the net for a 2-0 Griffin lead.

With less than nine minutes remaining in the first half, the Griffins extended their lead to 3-0.  Cheeks scored her second of the game.  This time she deflected a shot from Wynnsome Gadson to give the Griffins a 3-0 lead at the break.

Just over three minutes into the second half, Zyah Newsome scored her first collegiate goal to push the Griffins lead to 4-0.  Childress and Caitlin Bray executed a perfect give and go with Childress going one on one with the keeper and finding the back of the net for a 5-0 Griffin lead.  Converse scored a late goal for the 5-1 final.

Jane Eberhardt and Elizabeth Armbruster split the game in cage.  Armbruster allowed 1 goal and made three saves.

SHU returns to PSAC play on Saturday morning when they host West Chester at 11 AM.
