Seton Hill turned the ball over five times in the first half, four by interception, as Kutztown jumped out to a 35-3 halftime lead. The Golden Bears scored four more times in the second half in route to a 62-17 victory over the Griffins on Saturday afternoon at Andre Reed Stadium. SHU drops to 0-3 on the season while Kutztown improves to 2-1.
The Griffins picked up one first down before punting on their first possession. Kutztown needed just two plays to take a 7-0 lead after a 30 yard touchdown run. The Bears took advantage of the first Griffin interception to push their lead to 14-0 with 9:17 to play in the quarter.
Santiago Henao connected from 26 yards out to trim the lead to 14-3 midway through the quarter. The defense forced a punt on the next Kutztown possession as the Bears took the 14-3 lead into the second quarter.
Kutztown took advantage of another Griffin interception and extended their lead to 21-3 with a one yard touchdown run with 7:44 left in the half. The third interception of the half gave Kutztown a short field and they needed just two plays to increase their lead to 28-3 with 6:31 to play before the half. The final interception of the half led to another Kutztown touchdown as they built a 35-3 halftime lead.
The Golden Bears drove 73 yards in seven plays on their first drive of the second half to build a 42-3 lead. After the Griffins turned the ball over on downs, Kutztown marched 58 yards in 6 plays to increase their lead to 49-3 midway thru the third quarter. Kutztown led 56-3 after three quarters of action.
SHU got a ten yard touchdown pass from
Christian Strong to
Ty George early in the fourth quarter and
Evan Byrd scored from four yards out for the Griffin touchdowns in the fourth quarter.
The first down battle was tight with Kutztown having 27 and the Griffins 25. SHU gave up a total of 547 yards while producing 432 yards.
Strong finished the game 34-58 for 320 yards with a touchdown and four interceptions.
Khalil Owens rushed for 53 yards on 9 carries.
Michael Elardo had eight catches for 95 yards.
Cole Shuker had 8 solo tackles.
SHU opens up PSAC West play next Saturday as they travel to California (PA).
