Game Recap: Baseball |

Griffins Steal One from West Chester

With the game tied at five with two outs and a 2-2 count in the top of the ninth inning, the Griffins and Coach Maz pulled a trick from his bag, sending Craig Lewis from third base, stealing home with the game-winning run.  That run gave the Griffins a 6-5 win over the top seed from the east, West Chester in the first round of the PSAC Tournament at Johnstown's Point Stadium.  SHU improves to 33-18 on the season.

The Griffins did not waste much time in getting on the scoreboard as they pushed across a run in the top of the first inning.  After an out, Tyler Sullivan singled.  He scored on a two-out double from Mark Colella.  West Chester took the lead in the bottom of the third inning with two runs on two hits.  SHU retook the lead in the top of the fourth inning.  Colella was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  After two outs, Sam Vilk launched a ball over the wall in left field to give the Griffins a 3-2 lead.

Seton Hill added on to its lead in the fifth inning.  Lewis was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning.  Sullivan then hit an inside the park homer to extend the Griffins lead to 5-2.  Ty lined a ball to center field that took a crazy hop over the center fielders head allowing Sullivan to race around the bases.

The Rams got one of those runs right back in the bottom half of the inning with a one-out homer to left field.  West Chester tied the game at five with two runs on three hits in the bottom of the seventh.

In the eighth, MP Buckley reached on an infield single and moved to second on an error on the play.  He moved to third on a ground out from Vilk but was stranded on third after two strikeouts ended the inning.

Kenny Wells took over for starter Joe Shaffer in the eighth inning and allowed a runner to reach second with no one out but got two strikeouts and a groundout to end the threat for the Rams.

Lewis was hit by a pitch to start off the ninth inning.  He moved to second on a bunt from Sullivan.  A groundout to second was the second out of the inning setting up the heroics for Lewis.  Lewis stole third on a 1-2 pitch, then on the 2-2 pitch broke for home and with the pitch in the dirt, he was able to steal home and score the winning run.

Wells got a flyout and strikeout for the first two outs of the inning.  After an infield single, he got a groundout to end the game.

Wells earned the win with two shutout innings of work.  Joe Shaffer got a no decision, giving up 5 runs in 7 innings while striking out 9.

Sullivan, Buckley and Vilk each had two hits in the win.

With the win, the Griffins advance to the second round of the PSAC Tournament where they will meet the 3 seed from the east Lock Haven at 6:30 PM on Thursday evening.
