Seton Hill headed to Clarion for a PSAC West battle with each team looking for their first victory of the season. Clarion outscored the Griffins 13-7 in the second half and took advantage of five Griffin turnovers in route to a 33-28 victory. SHU falls to 0-6 overall and 0-3 in PSAC West action. Clarion improves to 1-5 on the season and 1-2 in PSAC West play.
Seton Hill took the opening kickoff to the Clarion 49 yard line but were forced to turn the ball over on downs. On their second possession, Clarion took advantage of a short field after a penalty on the SHU punt. The Eagles drove just 38 yards to take a 6-0 lead with 5:57 to play in the quarter. It did not take the Griffins long to respond as
Jarvis McClam took the first snap 76 yards to the house for a touchdown.
Santiago Henao's extra point gave the Griffins a 7-0 lead. The Griffins carried the 7-6 lead into the second quarter.
On the first play of the second quarter,
Christian Strong mishandled the snap and the ball rolled into the endzone where Clarion jumped on the ball for a touchdown. The PAT was good and Clarion took a 13-7 lead. SHU responded with a 10 play, 83 yard drive to retake the lead. The last play was a 14 yard touchdown pass from Strong to
Michael Elardo.
Keelyn Brown blocked a 36 yard field goal on the next Clarion drive and the Griffins took over at their own 20 yard line. SHU extended their lead to 21-13 on the following drive when Strong hooked up with Elardo on their second touchdown of the day. This one was a 31 yard touchdown pass. SHU forced a punt and took over on their own 20 yard line with 1:14 to play in the half. The next play would be a huge turning point as Strong was picked off and Clarion took over at the SHU 45 yard line. It only took the Eagles four plays to trim the lead to 21-20 with 40 seconds to play. Strong was also picked off on the next possession and Clarion was able to attempt a field goal but it was missed on the final play of the half.
Clarion needed just 3:04 to retake the lead in the second half. They drove 67 yards in just seven plays to take a 27-21 lead early in the third quarter. Late in the quarter, Clarion connected on a 37 yard field goal to build their lead to 30-21 after three quarters of action.
The Golden Eagles missed a 41 yard field goal early in the fourth quarter as they failed to extend their lead. Strong hit Elardo with a 52 yard pass on their next drive and the Griffins moved the ball to the Clarion 8 yard line but another interception ended the SHU drive. With 6:28 to play in the game, Clarion hit a 20 yard field goal to push the lead to 33-21. SHU needed just three plays to trim the lead. McClam caught two passes for 30 yards and Strong connected with
Cinque Sweeting for a 37 yard TD catch to cut the lead to 33-28 with 5:28 to play. The defense forced a punt and the offense took over at their own 16 yard line with just under three minutes to play. On the third play, Strong again connected with Elardo but as he was fighting for extra yards, was stripped of the ball, and Clarion recovered to end the ball game as they were able to run out the clock.
Both teams finished the game with 489 yards of total offense. Clarion had 25 first downs to 18 for the Griffins. The difference was SHU committed 5 turnovers while the Eagles did not commit one.
Strong was 22-36 for 354 yards with 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions. McClam finished with 105 rushing yards on 15 carries and one touchdown. Elardo had 7 receptions for 151 yards and two touchdowns.
Cole Shuker led the defense with 10 tackles.
SHU will host Gannon next Saturday at 4 PM for their homecoming contest.
