Seton Hill trailed IUP 2-0 in Friday evening's PSAC Southwest Divisional matchup but used career highs in kills from
Leah Bisignani and
Sidney Chapman to rally for a five set win over the visiting Crimson Hawks. Seton Hill improves to 15-4 overall and a division leading 8-2 in PSAC SW Division play. IUP drops to 16-7 overall and 7-3 in PSAC play.
The early part of the first set was tightly played before the Griffins went on a 4-1 run to take an 11-8 lead. IUP responded to take a 17-16 lead before back to back kills from
Viktoria Farian and
Katie Wenson gave SHU an 18-17 lead. IUP ran off four straight to take a 21-18 lead. Back to back kills from
Leah Bisignani trimmed the Hawks lead to 22-21 and Farian kept the Griffins within one at 24-23 but a service error gave IUP the first set by a 25-23 score.
The Griffins jumped out to an early 5-1 lead in the second set on three kills from Farian and two aces from
Maggie Murray. IUP was able to fight back and take a 13-8 lead. Later in the set, SHU went on a 5-0 run to cut the lead to one. After a block from
Erin Parks and
Jessica Beal and a
Hannah Moeller ace, SHU tied the set at 22. IUP scored the final three points to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
Seton Hill used a 5-0 run in the third set to take a 14-8 lead midway thru the third set. With a 19-13 lead, the Griffins went on a 5-0 run on two kills each from Farian and Bisignani and a Farian ace to cut the IUP lead to 2-1 with a 25-16 third set win.
IUP built an early 10-7 lead in the fourth set looking to close out the match. The Griffins would have none of that and went on a 5-0 run to take a 12-10 lead. IUP then used a 4-1 run to tie the set at 18. The teams exchanged points with the match tied at 21. A kill and an ace from Bisignani and a kill from Chapman pushed the Griffin advantage to 24-21. After two IUP points, Chapman sent the match to five sets with a kill, giving SHU a 25-23 win.
SHU came out of the gates fast in the fifth set taking a 6-1 lead. Two kills from Chapman and an ace from Murray forced an IUP timeout. Another kill from Chapman pushed the lead to 8-2. IUP fought back and got to within two points at 13-11 before Bisignani ended the match with a kill and an ace.
Bisignani led the Griffins with a career high 21 kills. She also added 6 blocks, 6 digs and 2 service aces. Farian tied her career high with 18 kills. She also added 19 digs. Chapman also hit a career high with 13 kills, including 4 in the fifth set. Murray ran the offense with 52 assists. She also added 12 digs, 5 kills, 4 aces and 3 blocks.
Mary Baich had a match high 23 digs.
SHU will continue PSAC Southwest Division play on Saturday afternoon when they take on Clarion at 1 PM.
