The Griffin softball team closed out their regular season with a PSAC West doubleheader at California (PA) looking to secure a PSAC playoff spot. SHU was not able to secure that spot as they were swept by the Vulcans. The Griffins lost a heartbreaker in game one, getting walked off 5-4 in 8 innings. California ended the Griffins season with a 12-1 win in game two. SHU falls to 16-26 overall and 9-11 in PSAC West action.
Seton Hill cracked the scoreboard first in the top of the first inning with a two out solo homer from
Ashley Perillo.
The Griffins added two more runs in the fourth inning.
Abbey Suhoski led off the inning with a single.
Brooke Bower pinch ran for Suhoski.
Carlee Wickstrom reached on a fielder's choice.
Victoria Stock followed with a single.
Paige Hertzog singled to drive in Wickstrom and give SHU a 2- 0 lead.
Michaela LeDonne increased the SHU lead to 3-0 with another RBI single.
California got one run back in the bottom of the fourth.
Victoria Stock threw out a runner at the plate after a fly out to center field to end the Vulcan threat. SHU got that run right back in the top of the fifth inning.
Monica Joseph led off with a single and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by
Caitlin Tobin. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Perillo singled to right.
The Vulcans trimmed the lead to 4-2 with a leadoff homer in the bottom of the sixth inning. Cal then tied the score in the seventh. With two outs, a fly ball was lost in the sun giving the Vulcans a base runner. The next hitter homered to left center field tying the score at four. Cal then won the game in the eighth with back to back hits with two outs.
Seton Hill got two runners on in the top of the first inning with two outs but a pop up to the pitcher ended the inning. California took a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning on three straight hits, the last one a three run homer. The Vulcans added three more runs in the bottom of the second to extend their lead to 6-0.
The Griffins got one run back in the third inning. Joseph led off with a single. Tobin walked. After an out, Suhoski reached on a fielder's choice. Wickstrom then knocked in a run as she reached on a fielder's choice. Cal scored one in the third and two in the fourth for a 9-1 lead.
Joseph had two hits for the Griffins.
