Griffins Win Third Straight in Florida

Seton Hill took on WV Wesleyan for the second time on their spring trip to Florida on Tuesday afternoon.  The Griffins used the long ball and the pitching of Joe Shaffer and Don McWreath in route to an 11-2 victory over the Bobcats.  SHU has now won three in a row and is 4-3 on the season. 

The Griffins struck for four runs in the bottom of the second thanks to the bat of Colton CarneyAnthony Fanelli led off the inning with a single.  He stole second and Zac Heide followed with a walk.  Both runners stole a bag and Mark Colella walked to load the bases.  Carney then drilled a 2-2 pitch over the left field wall for a grand slam and a 4-0 lead for the Griffins.  WV Wesleyan answered right back with two runs of their own in the top of the third. 

SHU added a run in the third after Fanelli singled and Carney and Heide walked to load the bases.  The Bobcat pitcher then balked in a run to make it 5-2.  The Griffins added two more in the fourth.  Aaron Previsky walked and stole second base.  He scored on a wild pitch.  Chris Miller then delievered an RBI double that scored Garret Vrbanic to increase the lead to 7-2. 

Seton Hill picked up two more insurance runs in the seventh.  After one out, Heide hit a solo homer to left.  Matt Malacane followed with a double.  He scored when he stole third and the throw went into left field.  Sam Mattai and Heide each added RBI hits in the eighth to push the Griffins lead to 11-2.

Chris Miller led the offensive attack with 3 hits.  Anthony Fanelli and Zac Heide each added 2 hits.

Joe Shaffer earned the win on the mound.  He worked five innings, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits.  He also struck out 10 hitters.  Don McWreath worked four shutout innings for the save.  He surrendered 2 hits and struck out 8.

SHU will be off on Wednesday before returning to action on Thursday when they make the short trip to Tampa to take on the defending national champions.  First pitch is set for 3 PM.
