Seton Hill hosted first place California (PA) on Saturday afternoon for Senior Day in the McKenna Center, looking to sweep the season series from the Vulcans. California jumped out to a 22-9 lead after the first quarter and never looked back for a 76-46 victory. SHU drops to 13-12 overall and 9-10 in PSAC play while the first place Vulcans improve to 18-5 overall and 15-4 in PSAC play.
California opened the game scoring 14 of the first 16 points of the contest to take a 14-2 lead midway through the first quarter.
Lindsey Mifsud hit a three before the Vulcans ran off six more points to take a 20-5 lead with three minutes to play in the quarter.
Chrisanna Green and
Kinross Obiefule each scored buckets before the end of the quarter as the Griffins trailed 22-9 after one quarter of play.
The Vulcans built their lead to 35-15 with 2:51 to play in the half. SHU then went on a 6-0 run to close out the half on buckets from
Jenna Kaufman and Obiefule and two Kaufman free throws. SHU trailed 35-21 at the half.
Back to back baskets from
Hannah Laslo cut the Vulcans lead to 42-25 with 7:37 to play in the third quarter. Cal then built their lead back up to 51-27 with 4:24 to play. The Griffins trailed 57-34 after three quarters of play.
The Griffins got as close as 22 points in the fourth quarter on a three pointer from
Alexandra Hay and a basket from Kaufman. That was as close as the Griffins would get as they dropped the 76-46 decision.
Jenna Kaufman was the lone Griffin in double figures with 13 points.
Halie Torris just missed double figures with 9 points.
Kinross Obiefule finished the game with 8 points.
SHU will head to Mercyhurst on Wednesday for a key PSAC contest. SHU is one game behind the Lakers for fifth place in the PSAC West.
