Football Ends Season With 30-21 Loss to Shippensburg

Seton Hill closed out its regular season by hosting Shippensburg on Senior Day looking for their first winning season since 2008.  SHU honored 21 seniors before the game.  The Griffin defense shut out the Raiders in the second half but it was not enough as SHU could not overcome a 27-7 deficit in falling by the score of 30-21.  SHU ends the season with a 5-6 mark, still the most wins since the 2008 season.  Ship ends the season with a 7-4 record.

Shippensburg took the opening kickoff and went three and out.  The Griffins first possession ended with an interception at their own 40 yard line.  Ship took advantage of the short field and needed just one play for a 40 yard touchdown pass to take a 7-0 lead with 12:17 left in the quarter.  The next seven possessions in the quarter ended with punts.  The last a Griffin punt by William Hodge that pinned the Raiders back at their own eight yard line.  Ship needed just one play again as they raced 92 yards untouched for a 92 yard scoring run to increase their lead to 14-0 with 1:56 left in the quarter.  SHU started the ensuing possession on their own 13 yard line.  Khalil Howard rushed for 45 yards on the first play and two plays later, Cory Cavanaugh hit Ty George with a 40 yard touchdown pass with 47 seconds to play, cutting the lead to 14-7.  On the next Shippensburg play from scrimmage, they connected on a 54 yard touchdown pass to increase their lead to 21-7 at the end of the first quarter.

On their second drive of the second quarter, Shippensburg increased their lead to 27-7 on a 27 yard touchdown pass with 7:09 to play in the second quarter.  The Griffins answered that drive with a nine play, 78 yard drive to cut the lead to 27-14 with 4:11 left in the half.  Howard scored on a fourth and goal from the one yard line.  The Raiders added a 34 yard field goal with 1:16 to play before the half to take a 30-14 lead into the halftime break.

Both teams started the second half off with a three and out series.  SHU cut into the lead and scored the final points of the game on their next possession.  Cavanaugh hit Brown for 11 yards on the opening play then found George with a 77 yard bomb to trim the lead to nine with 10:29 left in the third quarter.  On their final drive of the third quarter, Shippensburg missed a 23 yard field goal that could have extended the lead to 12.

On their second possession of the fourth quarter, SHU got to the Shippensburg 29 yard line but turned the ball over on downs.  SHU went three and out on their next drive and was forced to punt back to the Raiders with 5:22 to play in the game and could not get a stop and the Raiders were able to run out the clock with three kneel downs to end the game.

Seton Hill held an 18-15 advantage in first downs in the game.  The Griffins also outgained the Raiders by a 425-410 margin.  SHU had problems on third down as they were 0-14 in the game.

Cory Cavanaugh was 26-44 for 299 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Khalil Howard finished with 105 yards on 20 carries and 1 touchdown.  Ty George finished with 5 receptions for 142 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Ardell Brown pulled down 8 catches for 38 yards.
