SHU Advances in PSAC Tourney with 4-0 Win over Cal

Seton Hill hosted California for the second time in three years in the first round of the PSAC Tournament at Dick's Sporting Goods Field on Tuesday afternoon.  The Griffins scored twice in each half and took advantage of Cal playing a man down because of a red card in a 4-0 PSAC Quarterfinal victory.  SHU improves to 12-7 on the year while the Vulcans end their season at 10-6-1.

The game started out slow with each team feeling each other out in the early going.  SHU's Joe Smith had the lone shot on goal in the game's first 20 minutes.  California nearly took the lead in the 20th minute off of a long throw in.  After the throw, the Vulcans got a hold of a loose ball with the Griffin keeper trying to punch the ball out but hit the cross bar from five feet in front of the net.  The Griffins took the lead in the 26th minute after a perfectly executed give and go by Harry Beattie and Louis Mason.  Mason got the ball to Beattie who found Mason in the box and Mason beat the keeper low on the left side of the net.  Less than a minute later, the Griffins had a golden chance to increase the lead to 2-0 but Beattie's penalty kick sailed high and wide.  The turning point in the game occurred over the three minutes of the contest when a Vulcan player picked up two yellow cards in less than three minutes, forcing the Vulcans to play the final 60 minutes with just 10 men.  SHU was able to take advantage of playing with an extra man with their second goal of the game in the 41st minute.  Coin Watson sent in a cross from the right side and a Vulcan defender whiffed on the play, leaving Curtis Gallagher one on one with the Vulcan keeper.  Gallagher calmly slid the ball past the keeper to give SHU a 2-0 lead.  SHU took the 2-0 lead into the half and held a 6-2 advantage in shots.

Cal had one more chance to get back in the game just five minutes into the second half.  Griffin keeper Austin Iddon got off a bad goal kick which went straight to a Vulcan forward who then had a one on one with Iddon.  Iddon was up to the challenge, making the save and keeping Cal off the scoreboard.  The Griffins put the game away in the 57th minute with a spectacular one on one play from Rory McKinnon.  McKinnon beat a defender then did a spin move around another before finding a wide open Tom Urquhart in front of the net.  Urquhart then put the ball into the lower right hand side of the net for a 3-0 Griffin lead.  SHU scored its final goal in the 69th minute on a special play from McKinnon.  Rory beat his defender giving him a one on one with the keeper and he calmly slid the ball into the left side of the net for the fourth Griffin goal of the game.  SHU then just took the air out of the ball and ran out the clock.

Austin Iddon recorded 2 saves in the shutout win.  Rory McKinnon finished with a goal and an assist.

The Griffins outshot Cal in the game 17-7.  Cal did hold a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Seton Hill advances to the PSAC Final Four this weekend in Erie at Mercyhurst University.  SHU will take on the #1 seed and host Lakers at 11 AM on Friday morning in the PSAC Semifinal.
