Griffins Can't Capitalize on Early Red Zone Trips in Loss at Gannon

Seton Hill looked to extend its PSAC West winning streak to two at Gannon on Saturday afternoon and knock off the Knights for the first time in school history.  The Griffins could not capitalize on red zone possessions in the first half and gave up three second half touchdowns in a 34-12 road loss at Gannon.  SHU drops to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in PSAC play while the Knights improve to 4-3 overall and 1-3 in PSAC West action.

Gannon won the toss and deferred, giving the Griffins the ball on the first drive of the game.  The Griffins drove all the way down to the Gannon six yard line but three incompletions killed the drive and SHU settled for a 23 yard field goal from Santiago Henao to give SHU a 3-0 lead.  Gannon tried to answer on their next drive but missed a 27 yard field goal midway thru the first quarter.  SHU drove inside the Gannon ten on their next possession but a fumble ended the drive and kept SHU in the lead just by a 3-0 score.

On Gannon's first possession of the second half, Gannon tied the score with a 27 yard field goal with 12:06 left in the second quarter.  The Griffins fumbled the ensuing kickoff giving the Knights the ball at the SHU 34 yard line.  Gannon took advantage of the turnover and punched it in on a 17 yard run to take a 10-3 lead with 9:30 to play in the half.  Seton Hill used a 69 yard pass from Christian Strong to Malik Scott to set up another Henao field goal.  This time he connected from 27 yards out to cut the Gannon lead to 10-6 with 2:15 to play in the half.  SHU forced a three and out on the next Gannon possession and drove to the Gannon seven yard line.  An interception in the end zone ended the SHU drive with Gannon taking a 10-6 lead into the halftime break.

Each team was forced to punt on their first two possessions of the second half.  The Knights were able to extend their lead to 17-6 with 3:36 to play in the third quarter on a 12 yard touchdown pass.  SHU was forced to punt on their next possession and Gannon drove for another touchdown on their first possession of the fourth quarter.  The Knights increased their lead to 24-6 with 13:11 to play on a 13 yard touchdown pass.

After a Griffin punt, Gannon snapped the ball over their quarterback's head and Dexter Williams recovered it in the end zone for a Griffin touchdown with 11:50 to play in the fourth quarter.  SHU missed on the two point play and trailed 24-12. SHU got the ball back but threw an interception that was returned deep into Seton Hill territory.  Gannon took advantage of the short field and extended their lead to 31-12 with 8:02 left in the contest.

Ardell Brown had a big game with 9 receptions for 156 yards.  Nicholas Boynton finished with 11 tackles.  Jahquan Thompson added 9.

SHU will host Mercyhurst next weekend for homecoming.  Kickoff is set for 4 PM.
