Box Score Seton Hill and Pitt Johnstown battled in the McKenna Center on Saturday afternoon with fifth place in the PSAC on the line. The Griffins jumped out to a 45-30 halftime lead and held on for a 83-77 victory. With the win the Griffins moved ahead of the Mountain Cats into fifth place in the PSAC West Standings. SHU improves to 10-13 overall and 7-11 in PSAC play.
Chelsea Apke gave SHU a quick 2-0 lead. The Mountain Cats were able to build their lead 11-7 at the 16:39 mark of the half. SHU then went on a 12-2 run on baskets from Apke and
Kelly Brennan followed by three pointers from
Mariah Wells and
Halie Torris to take a 19-13 lead with 14:35 to play. UPJ then trimmed the lead to 19-18 before the Griffin offense exploded and went on a 22-0 run to take a 41-18 advantage with 5:45 left in the half. UPJ was able to cut the Griffins lead to 45-30 at the half. Wells led the Griffins with 10 points.
Kelly Brennan added 8 points.
The Mountain Cats drained two threes to open the second half and force a Griffin timeout at 47-36 with 17:59 to play in the half. The Griffins built their lead to 52-38 before UPJ was able to trim the lead back to 54-47 with 11:52 to play in the half. Back to back jumpers from
Kinross Obiefule extended the SHU lead to 65-52 with 6:26 to play. The Griffins pushed their lead to 80-62 with a minute to play. UPJ had a fierce comeback but came up short as the Griffins excaped with a 83-77 victory.
Four Griffins reached double figures and two others added 9 points in the win.
Kelly Brennan led the Griffins with 13 points.
Jharrin Gill added 12 points.
Mariah Wells and
Chelsea Apke each finished with 11 points. Apke added 11 rebounds for another double double.
Jenna Kaufman and
Meghan Mastroianni each finished with 9 points. Mastroianni added 12 rebounds.
The Griffins will take a break from PSAC play on Wednesday when they travel to Penn State Fayette for a nonconference matchup.
