Brennan Scores Career High 39 but Griffins Fall 87-82 at Slippery Rock

Box Score

The Griffins returned to PSAC West action on Saturday afternoon with a battle at Slippery Rock.  Seton Hill entered the contest with a three game winning streak.  Kelly Brennan scored a career high 39 points and SHU rallied from 19 down to tie the score at 77 but fell by an 87-82 score.  Brennan's 39 points are the most scored by a Griffin, since SHU made the move into the NCAA topping Jordan Burkes 37 points vs Shepherd in 2011.  SHU falls to 11-14 overall and 7-12 in PSAC play.

It was the Kelly Brennan show to start off the game as she scored the first seven points of the game for the Griffins and added 2 steals as SHU jumped out to a 9-4 lead at the first media timeout of the half.  The Rock responded with a 10-0 run to take a 14-9 lead before Brennan drilled a three to end the Rock run and cut the lead to 14-12 with 12:55 to play in the half.  SRU scored the next seven points to extend their lead to 21-12.  After Mariah Wells hit a free throw, the Rock scored 5 straight to take a 26-13 lead with 7:47 to play.  Brennan then scored 7 more points to get the Griffins back to within 10 at 32-22 with just over 5 minutes to play in the half.  SRU took a 42-27 halftime lead as they outscored the Griffins 40-18 over the final 16 minutes of the half.  Brennan scored 17 of the Griffins 27 points.

Brennan drained another three to cut the Rock lead to 44-32 but SRU scored seven straight to push the lead to 51-32 and force a SHU timeout.  Two more threes from Brennan cut the Rock lead to 55-44 with 13:20 to play.  Another Brennan three from long distance cut the Rock lead to 65-56 and two free throws from Jharrin Gill trimmed the lead to 65-58 with  nine minutes to play.  Two more Brennan free throws cut the lead to 65-60.  Chelsea Apke's layin cut the Rock lead to 70-66 with six minutes to play.  Another Apke layin cut the lead to 73-70 with 4:45 to play.  Two free throws from Brennan tied the score at 73.  Then the officials took over, calling two technicals on the Griffins and giving the Rock four points and a 77-73 lead.  Halie Torris hit a three and Brennan hit one of two to tie the score at 77 with 2:22 to play.  The Rock hit a jumper and Meghan Mastroianni hit one of two to cut the lead to 79-78.  SRU then hit three of four free throws to build the lead to 82-78.  Two Mastroianni free throws cut the lead to 82-80 with 30 seconds left.  After the Rock hit one of two, Mastroianni hit two more free throws to cut the lead to 83-82 with 19 seconds left.  SRU hit two free throws to push the lead back to 85-82 with 17 seconds left.  SHU missed their next shot and the Rock iced the game with two more free throws.

Kelly Brennan led the Griffins with a career high 39 points on 11-17 from the field and 6-10 from three point land.  Meghan Mastroianni finished with 18 points.

Seton Hill will travel to California (PA) on Wednesday evening.  Tip is set for 5:30 PM.
