Seton Hill hosted PSAC West leading Edinboro on Friday evening needing a win to stay alive in the PSAC West playoff race. The Griffins would come up short, dropping the match in four sets. With Cal's victory over Slippery Rock, the Griffins were eliminated from the PSAC playoff race with one game to play. SHU drops to 22-13 overall and 12-9 in PSAC play.
Edinboro took an early 5-3 lead in the first set before kills from
Cassie Hausfeld,
Jenna Sassack and
Jessica Beal and an ace from
Lauren Teed gave SHU a 7-6 lead. The Scots used a 4-0 run to extend their lead to 16-11. The Scots built their lead to 19-12 and took the first set by a 25-18 score. Edinboro took an early 7-2 lead in the second set, forcing a SHU timeout. SHU got kills from
Rachel Satira and Sassack and used two Edinboro errors to cut the lead to 13-10. Hausfeld's ace cut the lead to 21-18 and the Scots used their last timeout. A Boro attack error and a Satira kill trimmed the lead to 22-20 but the Scots scored the final three points of the set for a 25-20 win.
After the Griffins scored the first point of the third set, the Scots ran off five straight points for a 5-1 lead. The Griffins were able to battle back throughout the set and cut the lead to 15-14 midway through the set. Edinboro increased their lead to 20-16 forcing SHU to call their final timeout of the set. A kill from
Emily Gilles, an ace from Teed and a block from Beal and
Mary Baich tied the set at 20. Edinboro scored the next two before SHU went on a 4-0 run on a kill from Hausfeld and three Scots errors to take a 24-22 lead. The Scots then answered with three straight to set up a match point at 25-24. Hausfeld saved the match point and a Scots attack error gave SHU a set point at 26-25. Two Scot kills and a kill from Hausfeld had the set tied at 27.
Brynn Fleury got a kill and a ball handling error from the Scots gave the Griffins the third set by a 29-27 score.
The Scots again took a quick lead in the fourth set as they led 10-4. Kills from Hausfeld, Gilles and Baich and a block from Baich and Sassack trimmed the lead to 11-8. Hausfeld's kill had SHU trailing 17-14 but the Scots scored the final eight points of the match for a 25-14 fourth set win.
Cassie Hausfeld led the Griffins with a match high 17 kills.
Mary Baich and
Jessica Beal each added 5 kills. Baich, Beal and
Jenna Sassack each had two blocks.
Brynn Fleury had 38 assists and
Lauren Teed had a match high 29 digs.
SHU will close out the regular season on Saturday when they host Slippery Rock on Senior Day. The match is set for a 1 PM start.
