Twenty One Point Fourth Quarter Dooms Griffins on Homecoming

Seton Hill hosted Gannon on Homecoming in a steady downpour at Offutt Field on Saturday afternoon.  On a day when the Griffins honored the 2005 football team at halftime, SHU surrendered 21 points in the fourth quarter as they dropped a 43-28 decision to the Golden Knights.  With the loss the Griffins have now dropped four straight and fall to 2-6 overall and 1-4 in PSAC West action.

Gannon took the opening kick and drove 76 yards in eight plays to take an early 7-0 lead.  GU quarterback Liam Nadler was 7-7 on the first seven plays of the drive with a five yard touchdown run capping the drive.  SHU went three and out on their first possession and forced the Knights to punt on their second possession with SHU taking over at the 50 yard line.  After a run on the first play of the drive, Christian Strong hit Dylan Everett for a 12 yard gain, Logan Carns for a 15 yard gain and put seven on the board after a 24 yard touchdown pass to Ty George.  Gannon answered with a 26 yard field goal to take a 10-7 lead with 1:50 left in the first quarter.  SHU drove to the Gannon 37 yard line on the last play of the quarter.

On the first play of the second quarter, Strong hit Eric Brown for a 26 yard pass to the GU 12.  Three plays later Strong found Shane Leatherbury in the endzone for a 12 yard touchdown pass to give the Griffins a 14-10 lead with 14:26 to play in the half.  Gannon responded with a 63 yard drive and a 19 yard touchdown run to take a 16-14 lead with 10:48 left in the half.  SHU took over on the Gannon 30 yard line after a three yard punt with 3:34 left in the half.  After a holding penalty, Strong hit Larry Joshua with a 32 yard pass to move to the Gannon five yard line.  Two plays later, Brandon Stout scored from two yards out to give the Griffins a 21-16 lead with 1:56 left in the half.  The Griffin defense was able to hold Gannon on the final possession of the half and took a 21-16 lead into the halftime break.

SHU took the opening kick of the second half and drove 75 yards in 10 plays to increase their lead to 28-16.  Almost the entire drive was on the ground with Khalil Howard plunging in from seven yards out to end the drive.  Gannon used a 55 yard touchdown pass to trim the lead to 28-22 with 6:02 left in the half.  After back to back three and outs came the turning point of the game.  SHU faced a fourth and three from the Gannon 11 yard line and lined up for a 28 yard field goal.  SHU tried a fake on an end around to Ty George but the Knights snuffed it out and stopped George for a three yard loss ending the SHU drive with SHU leading 28-22 with 1:14 left in the third.

On their second possession of the fourth quarter, Gannon drove 73 yards for the go ahead score.  The Knights scored on a 14 yard touchdown run to take a 29-28 lead with 5:59 left in the game.  SHU took over on their own 36 yard line on the next drive but turned the ball over on downs after three straight incompletions after starting the drive with a five yard run on first down.  Gannon took advantage of the short field and scored on a five yard touchdown pass to increase the lead to 36-28 with 3:17 to play.  SHU turned the ball over on downs but forced Gannon to turn it back over on downs.  SHU took over on their own 27 with a minute to play but a pick six ended the drive and the game for the Griffins.

Gannon finished with a 27-18 advantage in first downs and an advantage in total yards of 493-365.  Christian Strong finished the game 22-48 for 193 yards and 2 touchdowns.  Brandon Stout rushed for 93 yards and a touchdown and Khalil Howard added 84 yards rushing and a touchdown.  Logan Carns had four catches for 55 yards.  Josh Falatovich ended the game with 13 tackles and 2 pass breakups.  Key Smith, Dexter Williams and Nicholas Boynton each added 9 tackles.

SHU will travel to Mercyhurst next weekend for a PSAC West contest with the kick set for 12 PM.
