Box Score Seton Hill hit the road for the first time in five games when they made the trip to Erie to take on Mercyhurst in a PSAC West battle on Wednesday evening. The Griffins knocked off the Lakers by the score 70-68 after a back and forth second half.
Mariah Wells tied the game with a three with less than a minute to play and then got a steal and a layin for the winning basket with less than 30 seconds to play. SHU improves to 8-10 overall and 5-8 in PSAC play.
Mercyhurst scored the first four points of the contest. The Griffins answered back with baskets from
Cha Cha Williams and
Jharrin Gill. The Lakers built their lead back to 10-6 at the 15:34 mark of the first half before the Griffins went on a 9-0 run over the next five minutes to take a 15-10 lead.
Lindsey Mifsud, who was making a return to her hometown of Erie, hit a three pointer to cap off the run.
Kelly Brennan hit a three and
Jenna Kaufman followed with a layup to give the Griffins their largest lead of the half at 20-12 with 7:01 to play in the half. The Lakers then scored six straight before
Mariah Wells ended the Lakers run with a three. Seton Hill took a 30-24 lead into the halftime break. Wells led the Griffins with 7 points.
Meghan Mastroianni opened the second half scoring with a basket to give SHU a 32-24 lead. Mercyhurst then went on a 20-9 run to take a 44-41 lead with 14:15 to play in the second half.
Chelsea Apke scored four straight points to give SHU a 49-48 lead and after a Laker free throw Brennan drained a three to put SHU ahead 52-49 with 10:19 to play. Mercyhurst scored four straight before Wells hit a jumper to tie the score and Mifsud hit her second three of the game giving the Griffins a 57-54 lead at the under 8 media timeout. Mifsud tied the score at 63 with a layup, forcing a Laker timeout with 4:18 to play. Mastroianni gave SHU a 65-63 lead with a basket with 3:08 to play. Mercyhurst followed with a three pointer to take a 66-65 lead with just under two minutes to play. The Lakers extended their lead to 68-65 with two free throws. Wells then tied the score at 68 with a three pointer with 49 seconds to play and then gave the Griffins a 70-68 lead with a steal and a layin with 30 seconds to play. Mastroianni then got a steal on the Lakers next possession with 11 seconds left. The Lakers were then forced to foul the Griffins. SHU missed the front end of the one and one but the Lakers three pointer at the buzzer came up short and the Griffins survived with a 70-68 win.
Chelsea Apke led the Griffins with her third straight double double. She scored 14 points and added 10 rebounds.
Mariah Wells also finished the contest with 10 points.
