Box Score The Griffins opened up PSAC West play with a road contest at Slippery Rock on Saturday afternoon. The Rock jumped out to a 28-0 halftime lead on Homecoming and never looked back as the #22 Rock defeated the Griffins 63-19. SHU falls to 1-3 overall and 1-2 in PSAC play.
Slippery Rock won the toss and elected to receive. That was a good choice by the Rock as they returned the opening kickoff 91 yards to take a quick 7-0 lead. After getting one first down on their first possession, the Griffins were forced to punt. Both teams punted on their next possession before the Rock extended its lead to 14-0 with a two yard TD run, midway thru the first quarter. Neither team was able to get much offense going the rest of the first quarter and the start of the second quarter. SRU finally got back in the end zone on a 45 yard TD pass with 7:46 left in the second quarter. The Griffins were forced to punt on their next possession and the Rock took advantage, extending its lead to 28-0 on a 28 yard TD pass with 3:54 to play in the second quarter.
Josh Falatovich ended the last Rock drive of the half with an interception on the Griffin 17 yard line with less than a minute to play in the half.
Seton Hill finally cracked the scoreboard on their second possession of the second half. Two long passes from
Drew Jackson to
FJ Williams and
Eric Brown and a Rock personal foul set up the Griffins at the Rock 39 yard line. Jackson then hit
Erik Kerns with a 39 yard TD pass to cut the Rock lead to 28-6 with 10:37 to play in the third. The Rock answered right back with a 33 yard TD pass to push the lead back to 35-6. SHU then drove 61 yards in 6 plays and Jackson hit
Marcus Peterson with a 20 yard TD pass to cut the lead back to 35-12 with 8:10 to play in the third. The back and forth scoring continued as the Rock scored from 14 yards out to extend their lead right back to 42-12. The Griffins scored their final touchdown of the contest when Jackson connected for his third TD of the game as he found Brown for a 37 yard TD. Slippery Rock scored three more touchdowns in the fourth quarter to close out the scoring.
Slippery Rock had 29 first downs to 23 for the Griffins and SRU outgained SHU by a 583-389 margin. The big advantage was on the ground as the Rock rushed for 261 yards to just 30 for the Griffins.
Drew Jackson finished the contest 23-38 for 343 yards and 3 touchdowns.
FJ Williams finished the day with 6 receptions for 104 yards.
Tyler Zimmer led the Griffin defense with 14 tackles and 1 interception.
Josh Falatovich finished with 11 tackles and 1 pick and
Chase Parker ended the contest with 10 tackles.
Seton Hill will continue PSAC West play next Saturday when they host California (PA) at 3 PM.
