Free Fall Continues for Griffin Women

Box Score

The continued free fall of the Griffin women's basketball team continued on Saturday afternoon as the Griffins hosted Slippery Rock on Senior Day.  SHU dropped their sixth in a row as they fell to Slippery Rock by the score of 62-60.  Seton Hill falls to 12-13 overall and 4-11 in PSAC West play.  The Griffins hold a slim hope for a PSAC playoff spot but need a win on Wednesday and some help to earn the sixth and final seed.

Slippery Rock scored 8 of the game's first 10 points to take a quick 8-2 lead.  SHU responded with back to back three pointers from Katie Gattuso and Tiara Stossel to tie the score at 8.  SRU scored 4 straight before back to back threes from Stossel and Kelly Brennan gave SHU its first lead at 12-8 with 13:41 to play in the half.  SRU then went on a 7-0 run to retake the lead.  Another three pointer from Stossel cut the lead to 19-18 with 5:31 to play.  The Rock extended its lead to 29-23 with 1:29 to play in the half but a three point play from Gattuso and a layin from Paige Alviani trimmed the Rock's halftime lead to 29-28.

SRU came out of the locker room and went on a 10-2 run to take a 39-30 lead just three minutes into the second half.  Paige Alviani ended the run with a three pointer and layins from Alviani, Kelly Brennan and Tiara Stossel gave SHU a 40-39 lead with just under 13 minutes to play in the second half.  The Rock answered right back with a 14-3 run to extend their lead to 53-43 with 7:02 to play.  The Griffins were able to battle back and tied the score at 56 on a three pointer from Meghan Mastroianni and back to back three pointers from Alviani with 2:23 to play.  Atfer Alviani hit her second three, SRU answered with a three of its own to take a 59-56 advantage.  Katie Gattuso cut the lead to 59-58 with a basket at the 1:40 mark.  SRU answered with a bucket before Mallory Sanner calmly sank both ends of a one and one to cut the lead to 61-60 with 1:05 to play.  After the Griffins got a defensive stop a very controversial offensive foul call on the Griffins negated a layin.  SRU hit one of two free throws with 27 seconds to play to push the lead to 62-60 and three Griffin shots would not go in the last 10 seconds as they dropped their seventh straight.

Katie Gattuso and Tiara Stossel each scored 16 points to lead the Griffins.  Gattuso added 9 rebounds, 4 blocks and 2 assists.  Stossel finished with 3 assists and 3 steasls.  Paige Alviani was the only other Griffin in double figures with 15 points.  She added 8 assists.  Kelly Brennan added 8 points off the bench.  Mallory Sanner finished with 9 rebounds, 5 steals and 1 block in a great defensive game.

SHU will host California (PA) on Wednesday and hope to keep their playoff hopes alive with a win.
