Playoff Hopes Fade as Griffins Drop Fifth Straight

Box Score

Seton Hill battled former WVIAC foe Pitt Johnstown in a key PSAC West contest at the Sports Center on Saturday afternoon.  The Griffins saw their playoff hopes diminished drastically following an 85-78 loss in Johnstown.  SHU falls to 12-12 overall and 4-10 in PSAC West play.  The Griffins are currently in eighth place with the top six teams making the playoffs.

Both team's offenses hit two jumpers and a three pointer and had the score tied at seven at the under 16 media timeout.  UPJ then went on a 10-3 run to push the lead to 17-10 with 11:58 to play in the half.  UPJ drained a three to extend the lead to 22-14 forcing a SHU timeout at the 10:12 mark.  The Lady Cats Kelsey Sleighter hit back to back three pointers to give the Cats their largest lead of the half at 30-20 at the 5:41 mark of the first half.  Another Sleighter three extended the lead to 36-24 forcing the Griffins to take their second timeout of the half with 2:51 to play.  UPJ took a 38-28 halftime lead.  Katie Gattuso led the Griffins with 11.

The Griffins opened the half on an 8-2 run with four points from Paige Alviani to cut the lead to 41-36.  UPJ answered with nine of their own to extend the lead back to 50-36 with 13:45 to play.  UPJ was able to keep their lead at 12 points at 62-50 at the under eight minute media timeout.    Five straight from Alviani and a layin from Tiara Stossel cut the lead to 69-59 with 5:32 to play.  Another free throw from Alviani and a jumper from Meghan Mastroianni trimmed the lead to 69-62 with 3:49 to play.  That was as close as the Griffins would get as UPJ closed out the game at the free throw line.

Paige Alviani led the Griffins with 23 points.  Katie Gattuso finished with 22 points and 9 rebounds.  Tiara Stossel was the other Griffins in double figures with 13 points.

Seton Hill will be off for the week and return to action next Saturday when they host Slippery Rock.  Tip is set for 1 PM and four Griffins will be honored before the contest.
