Box Score The Griffins hosted Mansfield University on Wednesday evening to close out the first round of PSAC Crossover action. Seton Hill used 43 points from the bench and a 49 point second half for a 77-69 victory over the visiting Mountaineers. Its the second straight victory for the Griffins as they get back to the .500 mark at 5-5 overall and improve to 2-3 in PSAC play.
The first five minutes of the contest were played very tightly with neither team able to gain a large advantage and the score was tied at 7 with 14:57 left in the half. SHU then got baskets from
Halie Torris,
Jenna Kaufman and a free throw from
Chelsea Apke to take a 12-7 lead. After a Mansfield layup,
Meghan Mastroianni drained a three pointer to push the Griffins advantage to 15-9 with 11:05 remaining in the half. Over the next four minutes, the Mountaineers went on a 11-4 run to take a 20-19 lead. Back to back layins from Kaufman and Mastroianni gave SHU a 23-20 lead before Mansfield hit a three to tie the score at 23 with just over five minutes to play in the half. Two free throws gave Mansfield a two point lead before
Mariah Wells pu the Griffins back ahead with a three pointer. Apke pushed the lead to 28-25 but two Mansfield free throws cut the Griffins lead to 28-27 at the halftime break. Mastroianni led SHU with 6 points at the half while Apke added 5 points.
Mansfield took the lead out of the gate in the second half before
Meghan Mastroianni hit back to back three pointers to put the Griffins back in front 34-33 two minutes into the half. Mansfield answered with back to back three pointers and were able to build their lead to 42-38 with 15:29 to play in the half. SHU then responded with a 14-2 run on baskets from
Jharrin Gill and three pointers from
Lindsey Mifsud,
Halie Torris and back to back threes from
Mariah Wells to give SHU a 52-44 advantage 10:48 to play in the half.
Cha Cha Williams gave SHU their largest lead to date at 10 with a basket at the 9:20 mark. Mansfield then went on an 8-2 run over the next 1:30 to trim the lead to 58-54.
Alexandra Hay ended the run with a three pointer. The Mountaineers again cut the lead to 4 at 63-59 with just over five minutes to play. Mastroianni then completed an and one followed by two
Chelsea Apke free throws and the lead ballooned back to 9 points with 4:25 to play. SHU pushed the lead back to 11 on back to back baskets from
Jenna Kaufman and put the game away at the free throw line, hitting 5 of 6 to ice the contest.
Meghan Mastroianni led the Griffins with 17 points. She also added 3 rebounds, 2 assists and 1 steal. Four Griffins scored 9 points including
Chelsea Apke,
Lindsey Mifsud,
Halie Torris and
Mariah Wells. Apke just missed a double double with 12 rebounds.
Alexandra Hay and
Jenna Kaufman each added 8 points. Hay posted a game high 7 assists and Kaufman added 6 rebounds.
Seton Hill will close out its 2014 portion of the season with a road PSAC Crossover at Lock Haven on Saturday afternoon. Tip is scheduled for 1 PM.
