Comeback Effort Comes up Just Short as Griffins Fall 31-27 at Edinboro

Box Score

Seton Hill closed out the road portion of their schedule with a game at Edinboro on Saturday afternoon.  The Griffins rallied from down 31-14 with two late touchdowns but could not complete the comeback and dropped a 31-27 decision to the Fighting Scots.  Both Seton Hill and Edinboro are now 2-8 overall and 2-7 in PSAC play.

Neither team was able to get much going on their first two possessions with three punts and one interception being the results of the two drives.  Edinboro finally got on the scoreboard in their third possession when they drove 42 yards in 9 plays for a 25 yard field goal to take a 3-0 lead with 1:19 to play in the first quarter.  The Griffins responded after getting a short field after a short kickoff.  Christian Strong hit Eric Brown for 24 yards on the first play and then Strong hit FJ Williams on the next play for a 40 yard TD pass to give the Griffins a 7-3 lead late in the first quarter.

The Scots retook the lead on their first possession of the second quarter.  Edinboro scored on a 7 yard TD pass to take a 10-7 lead with 12:56 to play in the half.  SHU answered with their own 75 yard drive.  The big play of the drive was a 35 yard reception by Jarvis McClamKhalil Howard scored from two yards out to put the Griffins ahead 14-10 with 10:09 left in the half.  That lead was short lived though as the Scots used a short field after the kickoff to score in 4 plays and take a 17-14 lead just over 5 minutes into the second half.  The Scots closed out the first half scoring with a 5 yard TD reception with 42 seconds to play.  SHU drove to the Edinboro 21 yard line but missed a 38 yard field goal on the last play of the half.

There was no scoring in the third quarter as the play got very sloppy with four possessions ending in turnovers, three by the Griffins.  Josh Falatovich forced the lone Scot turnover with Tim Johnson recovering the loose ball.  The Scots took advantage of the last Griffin turnover of the third quarter as they scored on a 3 yard TD run early in the fourth quarter to take a 31-14 lead with 10:56 to play.  The Griffins then went on a long drive, covering 6 minutes with 17 plays for 75 yards to cut the lead back to 31-21.  Strong hit McClam with a 2 yard TD pass.  The defense forced a three and out, giving the offense the ball back at their own 18 yard line with 4:09 to play.  SHU then went on a 13 play, 82 yard drive, culminating with a 8 yard TD pass from Strong to Larry Joshua that cut the Scots lead to 31-27 with 1:44 to play.  SHU kicked deep and the Griffin defense held Edinboro three and out to give the offense the ball back with 33 seconds to play on their own 17 yard line.  Four straight incompletions ended the Griffins rally.

Again the Griffins outgained and out first downed another opponent.  SHU held a 27-17 advantage in first downs and held a 499-388 advantage in total yards.  Christian Strong was 43-69 for 445 yards and 3 touchdowns.  Jarvis McClam and Eric Brown each had 13 catches on the day.  McClam had 146 yards while Brown had 134.  Josh Falatovich led the defense with 11 tackles.  Tyler Zimmer added 9.

SHU will close out the season next weekend when they host Cheyney for Senior Day.  Kickoff is set for noon.
