SHU Defeats Mercyhurst in Three

Seton Hill opened up the last weekend of the regular season with a matchup against the Lakers of Mercyhurst in the McKenna Center on Friday evening.  The Griffins controlled the match from the start and swept the Lakers by a 3-0 score.  SHU improves to 28-4 overall and 17-4 in PSAC play. 

Back to back aces from Shelby Kyllo gave the Griffins a 9-6 lead in the first set.  A kill from Corrine Gahagen extended the Griffins lead to 14-10.  Kyllo followed with a block to push the SHU lead to 18-13.  The Griffins pushed the lead to 22-15 before taking the first set by a 25-17 score.  Another ace from Kyllo gave SHU a 7-6 lead in the second set.  Gahagen's kill gave the Griffins a 11-8 lead.  The Lakers battled back and tied the set at 13-13.  Maggie Murray gave SHU a 17-15 lead with a kill.  Field pushed the lead to 20-16 with a kill.  Gahagen closed out the set with a kill, giving SHU a 2-0 lead with a 25-20 second set win.  Mercyhurst took an early lead in the third set.  They jumped ahead 4-1 and led 7-4 after a Kyllo kill.  A kill from Gahagen cut the Laker lead to 9-8.  SHU then scored three more in a row, the last on a Field kill to take a 12-9 lead.  Abigail Malsch extended the lead to 18-15 with a kill.  Murray and Kyllo combined on a block to give SHU a 20-18 lead.  Cassie Hausfeld gave the Griffins a match point with a kill and SHU led 24-19.  A Hurst hitting error gave the Griffins the set, 25-19 and the match 3-0. 

Corrine Gahagen led the Griffins with 9 kills.  She also added 3 blocks.  Cassie Hausfeld added 8 kills and 4 blocks.  Abigail Malsch finished with 7 kills in 10 attempts.  Courtney Field led the SHU offense with 25 assists.  Lauren Teed had a match high 14 digs.

SHU will close out its regular season with a huge PSAC West battle with Gannon on Saturday afternoon at 1 PM.  Both Seton Hill and Gannon will enter the match with identical 17-4 records in PSAC play.  The winner of the match will earn the second seed in the PSAC West and a quarterfinal home match on Tuesday evening.  Four Griffins seniors will be honored before the match.
