Seton Hill Drops Tight Contest with IUP

Box Score

The women's basketball team battled unbeaten Indiana (PA) in the McKenna Center on Saturday afternoon in a PSAC West contest.  SHU trailed IUP by just 3 at the half but could not get over the hump in the second half, dropping a 73-64 decision to the Crimson Hawks.  SHU falls to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in PSAC West play.

Both teams exchanged buckets early in the contest with the Crimson Hawks holding a 9-6 lead with 13:08 to play in the half.  The Crimson Hawks extended their lead to 7 a few times in the half, the last at 22-15 with 7:35 remaining in the half.  Back to back threes from Alexandra Hay and Lindsey Mifsud cut the Hawks lead to 22-21.  Meghan Mastroianni followed with a layin and the Griffins had their first lead of the contest at 23-22 with just under five minutes to play in the half.  IUP answered with a three and two free throws to build their lead back to 27-23.  A three pointer from Mariah Wells cut the lead back to one before IUP scored the last basket of the half to take a 29-26 lead into the halftime break.

IUP opened the second half on a 12-5 run to build the lead to 10 just over four minutes into the second half.  Chelsea Apke ended the run and cut the lead back to 8 before IUP built the lead back to 47-35 with 13:35 to play in the second half.  Back to back three pointers from Mifsud cut the Hawks lead to 50-46 with 11:20 to play.  IUP was then able to take their largest lead of the contest at 13 (61-48) with 6:45 to play.  The Griffins made one last run at IUP.  Baskets from Cha Cha Williams and Mastroianni sandwiched around a three pointer from Kelly Brennan cut the lead back to 62-57 with 4:31 left.  That was as close as the Griffins would get as IUP built their lead back up to as many as 11 before coming away with a 73-64 victory.

Lindsey Mifsud led the Griffins with 15 points on 4-5 shooting from three point land.  She also added 3 assists and a steal.  Chelsea Apke just missed a double double, finishing with 12 points and 9 rebounds.  Meghan Mastroianni was the other Griffin in double figures with 10 points.  Kelly Brennan finished the game with 8 points.

SHU will take a break from PSAC play this week as they travel to NAIA opponent Carlow University on Tuesday evening at 7:30 PM.  The game will be played at Oakland Catholic High School's Donahue Pavillion.
