Box Score Seton Hill hosted Clarion on Saturday afternoon on a cold and damp day at Offutt Field in Greensburg. The Griffins jumped out to a 30-2 lead and defeated the Golden Eagles by the score of 30-16. It is the first PSAC Western Division victory in school history for the Griffins. It is also the first home victory for the Griffins since October 9, 2010 when they Griffins defeated WV State. SHU is now 2-5 overall and 2-4 in PSAC play.
Neither team was able to score over the first five posessions of the first quarter. SHU finally cracked the scoreboard on their third possession.
Drew Jackson hit
Eric Brown with a 33 yard touchdown pass to give SHU a 6-2 lead with 6:13 to play in the first quarter. The extra point was blocked and Clarion returned the PAT for two points.
Speiser Alani strip sacked the Clarion QB and
Alex Attia recovered the ball, giving the Griffins the ball at the Clarion 46. SHU led 6-2 after the first period.
SHU continued that drive into the second quarter but were forced to turn the ball over on downs after a 4th and 21.
Tanelious Walton intercepted the Eagles on their next possession and returned it to the Clarion 43. SHU then went three and out but Clarion fumbled the punt and the Griffins recovered at the Clarion 11 yard line.
Brandon Stout rushed for 8 yards on the first play of the drive but the Griffins had to settle for a 21 yard field goal by
Jesser Boulnemour with 8:41 to play in the half that gave SHU a 9-2 lead. The Griffins held that 9-2 lead into the halftime break.
SHU switched quarterbacks to start the second half and it seemed to jump start the Griffin offense as
Dan Pietrangelo took over. SHU drove 71 yards in 12 plays (4:06) on the opening possession of the second half. Pietrangelo hit
FJ Williams with a 10 yard TD pass to give SHU the 16-2 lead. Walton intercepted his second pass of the game on the next Clarion drive and returned it to the Griffin 38 yard line. SHU drove to the Clarion 24 but was forced to turn the ball over on downs. The Griffins led 16-2 after three quarters of action.
The Griffin defense forced a turnover on downs on the first play of the fourth quarter. The Griffins took advantage as they scored on a 30 yard TD catch by Williams from Pietrangelo to complete a 8 play, 59 yard drive.
Tyler Zimmer recovered a fumble on the next Clarion possession at the Eagles 25 yard line. SHU took advantage of the turnover and Williams caught his third TD pass of the game from Pietrangelo to increase the SHU lead to 30-2 with 7:26 to play in the fourth. Clarion scored two late touchdowns to end the scoring.
For the third straight week the Griffins had more first downs (23-10) and total yardage (385-247) than their opponent.
Dan Pietrangelo was 13-20 for 124 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Brandon Stout rushed for 139 yards on 29 carries.
FJ Williams had 6 catches for 66 yards and 3 touchdowns.
Titus Morris led the defense with 8 total tackles.
Josh Falatovich added 8 tackles.
Seton Hill will look to make it two in a row next weekend when they travel to Gannon for a noon kickoff.
