The Griffins women's basketball team opened the second half of PSAC West action in grand style on Wednesday evening. Seton Hill held Mercyhurst to just 16 second half points in cruising to a 65-39 victory. SHU improves to 12-7 overall and 4-5 in PSAC West play.
After Mercyhurst took a 3-0 lead,
Mallory Sanner got the Griffins on the board with a jumper in the paint. Over the next seven minutes it was the
Tiara Stossel show as she drilled four three pointers in four attempts which gave the Griffins an 18-14 lead with 10:31 to play in the half. The Lakers answered with five straight of their own before back to back baskets from
Katie Gattuso gave the Griffins a 22-21 lead with just over four minutes remaining in the first half. SHU then closed the half on an 8-2 run to take a 30-23 lead into the halftime break.
Meghan Mastroianni scored four points during the run.
After exchanging baskets to start the second half, it was all Griffins all the time as they then went on a 16-3 run over a ten minute stretch to push the lead to 48-28 with just over nine minutes to play in the half. Seton Hill was able to control play the rest of the second half and cruised to a 65-39 victory. Mercyhurst never got any closer than 17 points the rest of the second half.
Tiara Stossel led the Griffins with 18 points on 7-8 shooting including 4-5 from three point land. She also added 3 assists and 3 steals.
Meghan Mastroianni posted her first double double of the season with 12 points and 11 rebounds. She also added 4 assists.
Katie Gattuso finished the game with 11 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals.
Paige Alviani also scored 11 points. Paige also had 6 assists and 6 rebounds.
Mallory Sanner finished with 8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists, 4 steals and a block.
Seton Hill shot 52% from the field in the contest. Mercyhurst shot just 27% from the floor including a 5-25 in the second half. Seton Hill also outrebounded the Lakers 37-28.
The Griffins will travel to Gannon on Saturday afternoon for another PSAC West battle. Tip off is set for 1 PM.
