Griffins Come up Short at Cal U 78-70

Seton Hill made the short trip down Interstate 70 to Washington County to battle California (PA) in a PSAC West battle on Saturday afternoon.  The Griffins battled back from 15 points down to cut the lead to two in the second half but it was not enough as they dropped a 78-70 decision on the road.  SHU falls to 11-7 overall and 3-5 in PSAC West play. 
 
The Griffins jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead at the first media timeout on two baskets from Katie Gattuso and one from Meghan Mastroianni.  The Vulcans turned the ball over 5 times before the media timeout.  SHU was able to push the lead to 11-1 on a three pointer from Tiara Stossel and another basket from Gattuso.  Cal then answered with a 5-0 run to trim the lead to 11-6 at the 11:39 mark of the first half.  The Vulcan run continued as they took a 17-11 lead at the 8:50 mark forcing a Griffin timeout.  Mastroianni ended the 16-0 Vulcan run with a basket to cut the Cal lead to 17-13.  Cal was able to build on their lead and led 28-17 with 4:29 to play in the half.  Cal took a 39-24 halftime lead.  Gattuso led the Griffins with 8 points. 
 
Seton Hill was able to close the lead to 42-32 at the under sixteen minute timeout on four points each from Meghan Mastroianni and Katie Gattuso.  Five straight points from Gattuso cut the lead to 44-39 at the 13:20 mark of the second half.  Cal extended the lead to 47-41 at the under 12 minute media timeout.  Two free throws from Paige Alviani trimmed the lead to 51-47 at the 9:42 mark.  Mallory Sanner drained a three pointer to cut the lead to 56-54 with 5:25 to play.  Tiara Stossel then hit a three to cut the lead to 61-59 with 4:06 to play.  Cal then answered with back to back three pointers to push their lead back to 69-64 with two minutes to play.  Alviani's layin cut the lead to 74-70 with 47 seconds left.  Cal hit 4-4 free throws to end the game.
 
Katie Gattuso posted another double double of 25 points and 11 rebounds.  Paige Alviani finished with 15 points and 6 assists.  Meghan Mastroianni also reached double figures with 10 points. 
 
The Griffins will host Mercyhurst on Wednesday evening in a PSAC West contest.
