The Griffins made the short trip up I-79 to battle Slippery Rock in a PSAC West contest on Wednesday evening. SHU saw their five game winning streak come to an end with a 75-70 overtime loss. SHU falls to 11-6 overall and 3-4 in PSAC West play.
Mallory Sanner started off the contest with a three point play just eight seconds into the contest. Sanner continued her hot play scoring seven points before the first media timeout of the half where the Griffins held a 14-11 lead. A jumper from the paint by
Tiara Stossel and a three pointer from
Paige Alviani pushed the lead to 19-11 at the 11:17 mark of the first half. The Griffins continued to build on their lead using a 9-2 run capped by an Alviani three pointer which gave the Griffins a 28-13 lead at the 7:35 mark. Slippery Rock was able to cut the lead to 33-23 at the under four minute media timeout. Alviani capped the first half by hitting a three pointer at the buzzer giving the Griffins a 40-30 halftime lead. Alviani and
Katie Gattuso each had 9 points at the half. Sanner and Stossel both added 7 points.
The Rock drained two three pointers off of two Griffin turnovers to start the half and trim the lead to 40-36 just over a minute into the half. The run continued as the Rock took a 42-40 lead before
Katie Gattuso ended the run with a bucket to tie the score at 42. The Rock took a 55-51 lead at the under eight media timeout. SRU pushed the lead to 58-51 forcing a SHU timeout. Back to back threes from
Tiara Stossel and
Mallory Sanner cut the lead to 58-57 with 4:48 to play. A layin from Sanner tied the score at 61 and
Paige Alviani followed with a basket to give the Griffins a 63-61 lead with two minutes to play. Gattuso's follow up bucket pushed the lead to 65-61 with 1:15 to play. The Rock answered with a bucket to trim the lead to 65-63. The Griffins came up short on their possession and the Rock tied the score at 65 with a jumper in the paint with 10 seconds to play to send the game into overtime.
Alviani put the Griffins ahead in overtime with a three pointer. After a Rock basket, Alviani hit two free throws to push the lead back to 70-67. The Rock scored a bucket at the 2:20 mark of the OT period to trim the lead to 70-69. The Rock took their first lead of the OT at 71-70 with a jumper at the 1:40 mark of the half. The Rock then went 4-4 from the line to close the game.
Katie Gattuso led the Griffins with a double double performance of 20 points and 18 rebounds.
Paige Alviani finished the game with 16 points.
Mallory Sanner added 14 points and
Tiara Stossel scored in double figures with 10 points.
Seton Hill will travel to California (PA) on Saturday afternoon for a PSAC contest.
