The Seton Hill women continued PSAC West play with a road contest at Clarion's Tippin Gymnasium on Saturday evening. The Griffins rebounded from a tough first half to rally for a 64-58 victory. The victory is the fifth in a row for the team. SHU improves to 11-5 overall and 3-3 in PSAC West play.
The Griffins came out of the gate slowly and trailed 6-2 at the under 16 media timeout. SHU hit just one of eight field goal attempts in the games first four minutes. Clarion continued to extend its lead in the first half and had a 15-7 advantage at the under 12 media timeout.
Meghan Mastroianni had five of the Griffin seven points. The lead for the Golden Eagles continued to grow over the next four minutes and Clarion held a 23-11 lead with 7:59 to play in the half. Back to back threes from
Tiara Stossel and
Paige Alviani trimmed the Clarion lead to 26-22 with 4:15 to play. Seven straight from Mastroianni and a lay in from Alviani cut the Clarion lead to 33-29 at the halftime break. Mastroianni led the Griffins with 12 points.
The Griffins were able to battle back in the early part of the second half and tied the score at 37 after a basket from
Mallory Sanner and a free throw from
Katie Gattuso. A put back basket from Gattuso gave the Griffins a 43-42 lead with 13:15 to play in the half. Another put back after an offensive rebound from Gattuso put the Griffins up 50-47 with just under eight minutes to play. SHU then went on a 7-2 run to push the lead to 57-49 forcing a Clarion timeout at the 5:20 mark. Clarion scored four straight to cut the lead to six but four Alviani free throws pushed the lead back to 63-56 with 37 seconds to play.
Meghan Mastroianni led the Griffins with 18 points.
Tiara Stossel and
Paige Alviani each added 15 points.
Katie Gattuso finished with a double double of 12 points and 15 rebounds.
The Griffins will look to make it six in a row on Wednesday when they travel to Slippery Rock.
