After being named first team All WVIAC on Monday afternoon, junior forward
Katie Gattuso proved why she was a first team selection, with a huge game of 31 points and 21 rebounds. Gattuso put the Griffins on her back and carried the squad to the quarterfinals with a 78-65 victory over Concord. With the victory, the Griffins have won 5 of 6 and are now 17-12 on the season.
Concord hit their first three shots of the contest and jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead. After the Griffins settled down, they answered with a 10-0 run of their own to take a 10-6 lead with 14:19 to play.
Tiara Stossel had 4 points during the run. The game was tight until the 8 minute mark when the Griffins had a 18-17 lead.
Katie Gattuso started and ended a 10-0 Griffin run with baskets that gave the team a 28-17 lead with 4:43 to play. After a Gattuso basket gave the Griffins a 34-25 lead with 1:37 to play, Concord closed out the half on a 7-2 run to enter the halftime break trailing just 36-32.
Concord opened the second half on a 6-0 run just like they did in the first half to take a 38-36 lead.
Paige Alviani tied the score at 38 and a jumper from
Meghan Mastroianni gave the Griffins a 40-38 lead, a lead in which they would not relinquish the rest of the half. The Griffins continued their 13-2 run and led 49-40 with 13:53 to play after a jumper from Stossel. Concord cut the lead to three at 54-51 with just under 10 minutes to play but Stossel answered right back with a three of her own. Gattuso then six straight free throws, all of which were one and ones to push the lead to 65-55 with 3:42 to play. After a Concord basket, Alviani drained a three to push the lead to 11 and the Griffins never looked back. SHU was 16 of 18 from the line in the game's last five minutes to ice the contest.
Katie Gattuso led the Griffins with a game high 31 points and 21 rebounds. Its her 20th double double of the season. She also added 4 blocks and 2 assists.
Tiara Stossel added 17 points and 7 rebounds.
Paige Alviani was the third Griffin in double figures with 15. The Griffins finished the game 27-32 from the line.
Seton Hill advances to play #13 seed Alderson Broaddus, who advanced with a 58-54 upset of #4 seed Davis & Elkins, on Wednesday afternoon at 1 PM in the WVIAC Quarterfinal at the Charleston Civic Center.
