Seton Hill battled back from a 20 point deficit in the first half to tie the game twice in the games final minute but came up just short falling by a 72-71 margin at home to Fairmont State on Senior Night. With the loss the Griffins fall to 15-12 overall and 12-9 in WVIAC play. The Griffins currently sit in sixth place in the WVIAC standings.
The Griffins came out of the gates surprisingly flat and trailed Fairmont State by a 15-2 margin just 6 minutes into the contest. The Griffins lone basket over that six minute stretch came from
Katie Gattuso that cut the lead to 4-2 at the 18:38 mark. A
Paige Alviani three ended the FSU 11-0 run and cut the lead back to 10 at 15-5. Fairmont was able to push its lead to 17 (26-9) at the 10:38 mark of the first half. FSU continued to build its lead to 20 at 36-16 with 6 minutes to play.
Mallory Sanner hit a three to key a 13-4 SHU run that trimmed the lead to 40-29 with 2 minutes left.
Tiara Stossel also hit back to back threes in the run. FSU took a 44-31 lead into the halftime break.
Seton Hill came out in the second half and continued to cut into the FSU lead. When
Kelly Brennan hit a three with 12:51 to play the Griffins trailed by just 6 at 52-46. FSU pushed the lead back to 10 but back to back baskets by Gattuso cut the lead back to 6 with 8 minutes to play. FSU answered with 4 straight points to push the lead to 63-53 with 6:48 to play. Layups from Brennan and Sanner followed by two Gattuso free throws trimmed to lead to 4 at 63-59 with 4:44 to play.
After a FSU basket, Alviani drained a three to cut the lead back to three. Fairmont built its lead back to 68-62 with 2:30 to play. Alviani then hit another three and
Meghan Mastroianni calmly drilled a three to tie the contest at 68 with 1:31 to play. Fairmont hit two free throws to lead by two and Alviani answered with two of her own to tie the score at 70 with 57 seconds left. A put back basket from FSU gave them a 2 point lead with 40 seconds to play. After a foul on the Griffins, Fairmont was assessed a technical foul, Alviani hit the first but missed the second, leaving the Griffins trailing by 1. After a missed FSU free throw, SHU had one final shot but a turnover ended their chance and Fairmont escaped with a one point win.
Paige Alviani scored a game high 21 points.
Katie Gattuso recorded her 18th double double of the season with 20 points and 11 rebounds.
Tiara Stossel and
Kelly Brennan each added 9 points.
Seton Hill will travel to Pitt Johnstown on Saturday afternoon for a huge WVIAC matchup with fifth place in the league on the line.
