Zach Voytek led the Griffin wrestlers to an 11th place finish in their first ever appearance in the PSAC Wrestling Championships at Edinboro University on Saturday. Voytek finished in sixth place in the 157 pound weight class. The Griffins finished the tournament with 13 team points, just ahead of last place Millersville who ended the tournament with 12 points. Division I Edinboro won the event with 172.5 points.
Voytek won his opening round match by a 18-6 score before falling to the number one seed in the weight class by a 11-4 decision. Zach stayed alive with 12-2 and 12-4 decisions before dropping into the fifth place match with a 4-1 loss. Voytek was then defeated by Elias Biddle of Lock Haven in the fifth place match by a 6-4 score. The Griffins also got a victory from
Christian Bosco in the 165 pound weight class. Bosco dropped his first match before advancing by fall (4:01) in his first elimination match. Christian was then eliminated by fall in his next match.
Tyler Mohlhenrich earned the other Griffin victory with a 3-2 victory in his first round match at 174 pounds. Mohlhenrich then dropped his next two matches to be eliminated.
Andrew Schutz (133 lbs),
AJ Fisher (141 lbs),
Tanner Druck (149 lbs) and
Tyler Dombrowski (184 lbs) each dropped their first two matches in the event as the Griffins put wrestlers in seven of the ten weight classes.
The Griffins will return to the mats on Friday when they travel to Waynesburg for a 6 PM match.
