Mastroianni's Layup Gives Griffins 63-62 Upset Win Over Indiana (PA)

Meghan Mastroianni's left handed lay up with 3.1 seconds to play gave the Griffins a 63-62 victory over #25 Indiana (PA) on Saturday afternoon in the McKenna Center.  With the victory, the Griffins improve to 5-3 overall and 1-3 in PSAC play.  IUP falls to 6-1 overall and 2-1 in PSAC play. 

Seton Hill came out of the gates strong and took an 8-3 lead with 14:59 to play on a layup from Paige Alviani.  IUP answered right back with a 19-2 run to take a 22-10 lead with 8:43 remaining in the first half.  Alviani ended the run with a three pointer.  Another layin from Alviani and two free throws from Meghan Mastroianni trimmed the lead to 24-17 with 5:27 to play.  IUP then went on a 11-4 run to push the lead to 35-21.  Two Tiara Stossel free throws trimmed the lead to 35-23 at the halftime break.  Stossel led the Griffins with 8 points.  Alviani chipped in 7 in the half.

The Griffins began to cut into the IUP lead early in the second half.  A three pointer from Alviani made it 37-33 with 15:45 to play in the half.  Katie Gattuso's free throw tied the score at 39 and two free throws from Stossel gave the Griffins their first lead of the half at 41-39 with just over ten minutes to play in the half.  After a free throw from Mallory Sanner gave SHU a 42-41 lead, IUP led for the next five minutes until Alviani drained a three to tie the score at 52 with 5:12 to play. 

Alviani then hit two free throws to give SHU a 54-52 lead.  IUP tied the score for the sixth time in the half on their next possession.  The Griffin defense then clamped down and held IUP scoreless for the next two minutes while hitting four free throws to push the lead to 58-54 with 2:25 left.  Four straight points from IUP's Lindsay Stamp tied the score at 58 with 1:21 to play.  Sanner was then fouled and calmly sank both free throws giving the Griffins a 60-58 lead with 1:21 left.  Another jumper from Stamp tied the score at 60 with just over a minute to play.  Alvani pulled down a defensive rebound on the next IUP possession and Gattuso hit one of two from the line to give SHU a 61-60 lead with 23 seconds to go.  IUP took the lead with a driving layin with 9 seconds to play setting up the heroics for the Griffins.  Mastroianni got the ball in the left post, spun to her left, left the IUP defender on the floor and finished with her left hand to give SHU the 63-62 lead with 3.1 seconds to play.  Gattuso stole the IUP inbounds pass, sealing the upset win for the Griffins. 

Paige Alviani led the Griffins with 17 points.  Katie Gattuso just missed a double double with 15 points and 9 rebounds.  Meghan Mastroianni and Tiara Stossel each added 12 points with Mastroianni pulling down 6 rebounds.  Mallory Sanner added 7 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 steals.  IUP attempted 25 more field goals in the contest than the Griffins (62-37). 

Seton Hill will take the week off for finals before returning to the court on December 17th when they host Cheyney at 5:30 PM.
