Griffins Fall in Four Sets at Cal PA

The Griffin volleyball team looked to end a two game losing streak when they made the short trip to California (PA) to battle the Vulcans in a PSAC West contest.  The Griffins losing streak reached three following a 3-1 loss.  California took the first set by a 25-19 score.  The Griffins survived an 11-0 run to take the second set by a 25-19 score to even the match at one. California took a 2-1 lead with a 25-23 win in the third set.  California closed out the match with a 26-24 victory.  Seton Hill falls to 24-8 overall and 15-6 in PSAC play.
 
Seton Hill battled early and was tied with the Vulcans at 6.  Cal was able to extend their lead to 13-9 in the first set.  The Vulcans then pushed their lead to 20-15 late in the set.  A kill from Corrine Gahagen trimmed the lead to 21-19.  Cal was able to run off four straight points to force a Griffin timeout at 24-19.  Cal finished off the set with a kill. 
 
The Griffins took an early 6-3 lead in the first set on an ace from Gahagen.  A kill from Cassie Hausfeld extended the lead to 7-3.  Cal stormed back with 7 straight points, including 4 aces to take a 10-7 lead.  The Cal run continued with 4 more points to extend the lead to 14-8.  The Griffins responded right back and trimmed the lead to 15-13 after an Abigail Malsch kill.  Lauren Teed had back to back aces and the Griffins trailed by just one at 17-16.  A Gahagen kill gave the Griffins the lead back at 18-17.  Gahagen and Malsch combined on a kill to push the lead to 20-17.  Courtney Field's kill gave the Griffins a 22-19 lead.  Two Griffin attack errors gave the Griffins the second set. 
 
Seton Hill took an early 6-3 lead in the set and was able to extend the lead to 12-7, forcing a California timeout.  Back to back Malsch kills pushed the lead to 14-7.  Gahagen gave the Griffins a five point lead at 16-11.  Cal battled back to tie the set at 17.  A Hausfeld kill gave SHU an 18-17 lead.  Kelsey Profio gave the Griffins a 20-19 lead with a kill.  Shelby Kyllo's solo block tied the score at 21.  Field then gave the Griffins a 22-21 lead.  Kyllo's kill made the score 23-22.  California was able to take the match by a 25-23 score.
 
The Griffins again took an early 4-1 lead in the fourth set.  Cal tied the score at 6 before a hitting error gave the Griffins a 7-6 lead forcing a Cal PA timeout.  A block from Gahagen and Profio gave SHU an 11-8 lead.  A solo block from Kyllo gave SHU a 14-12 lead.  Cal ran off four points to force a SHU timeout at 16-14.  Cal was able to extend their lead to 19-16.  A Griffin service error gave Cal a 21-18 lead.  The Griffins battled back to trim the lead to 22-21.   Profio's kill and a Hausfeld ace tied the score at 24.  California closed out the match with two kills. 
 
Abigail Malsch led the Griffins with 13 kills.  Corrine Gahagen followed with 10 kills.  Shelby Kyllo had 5 total blocks while Malsch and Gahagen each added 4.  Courtney Field had 32 assists.  Lauren Teed had 30 digs.
 
Seton Hill returns to action on Friday when they host Edinboro in their Breast Cancer Awareness match.  The match is set for a 7 PM start.
