The Seton Hill women made history on Wednesday evening by playing their first ever PSAC West contest on the road at Mercyhurst. Mercyhurst broke open a tight game with a run at the start of the second half and stayed in control for an 85-75 victory. SHU falls to 3-1 overall and 0-1 in PSAC West play.
Seton Hill jumped out to a quick 14-8 lead at the first media timeout of the half. SHU got five points from
Mallory Sanner and four points from
Meghan Mastroianni. Mercyhurst cut the lead to 15-13 before a Sanner layin gave SHU a 17-13 lead at the 11:15 mark of the first half. The Griffins then went into a scoring drought and then trailed 21-17 at the under 8 media timeout. The drought continued and the Lakers extended their lead to 27-19 at the 6:23 mark. The Griffins responded with an 8-0 run to tie the game at 27 with 4:39 to play in the half. Four points from
Meghan Mastroianni, a three pointer from
Tiara Stossel and a free throw from
Paige Alviani tied the score. The Lakers were able to retake the lead 33-29 at the under four media timeout. The Griffins took their final lead of the half on a
Katie Gattuso basket at the 1:46 mark. Stossel's basket with 3 seconds remaining tied the score at 38 before a technical foul on the Griffins gave the Lakers a 39-38 halftime advantage. Stossel led with 10 points while
Mallory Sanner added 9.
Mercyhurst came out of the gates quickly in the second half and took a 47-39 lead with 16:25 to play in the half. SHU was able to trim the lead to 53-48 before a three pointer gave the Lakers a 56-48 lead with 11:19 to play. A three point play from Sanner cut the lead to 69-61 but the Lakers scored the next four points and iced the game at the free throw line.
Meghan Mastroianni and
Tiara Stossel each had 19 points for the Griffins.
Mallory Sanner finished with 12 points.
Katie Gattuso and
Paige Alviani each added 11. Gattuso and Alviani each posted double doubles with Gattuso having 11 rebounds and Alviani 10 assists.
Seton Hill returns to the court on Saturday when they host #2 Gannon at 1 PM.
