Griffins Fall in PSAC West Opener at Mercyhurst 79-74

The Griffins men opened up PSAC West play on the road at Mercyhurst on Wednesday night.  Mercyhurst hung on for a 79-74 victory.  The Griffins fall to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in PSAC West play. 
 
Mercyhurst had a 5-4 lead at the first media timeout.  Nate Perry's three pointer cut the Mercyhurst lead to 11-10 with 12:20 to play.  A three point play by Malachi Leonard gave SHU a 13-11 lead with 10:28 left in the half.  A 6-0 run gave the Griffins their largest lead to date at 19-12 with 8:35 left.  Mercyhurst battled back and took a 27-25 lead at the under four media timeout.  Mercyhurst took control down the stretch and took a 39-31 halftime lead.  Max Kenyi and Malachi Leonard each had 9 points at the half. 
 
Mercyhurst continued to lead in the early part of the second half and extended their lead to 51-35 with 16:55 to play.  The Griffins then went on a 7-0 run to trim the lead to 9 points.  Mercyhurst pushed the lead back to 11 at the under 12 media timeout.  A three from Oliver McGlade and two Malachi Leonard free throws cut the lead to 58-52 with 9:30 to play.  Kameron Taylor hit a jumper from the paint and a Max Kenyi free throw cut the lead to 63-60 with 5:22 to play.  Leonard made it 64-63 with a three point play at 4:15.  Three Laker free throws pushed the lead back to 70-65 with 1:49 to play.  Three free throws cut it to 70-68 with under a minute to play.  Both teams exchanged three pointers setting up the final 27 seconds.  Mercyhurst put the game away from the free throw line.   
 
Max Kenyi finished with 25 points.  Malachi Leonard added 16 points.
 
Seton Hill will return home to host Gannon on Saturday afternoon at 3 PM.
