Griffins Defeat Slippery Rock 3-0

The Griffin volleyball team started their trip to the northern PSAC West schools with a match at Slippery Rock on Friday evening.  The Griffins swept the Rock by a 3-0 score.  Seton Hill took the first set by the score of 25-17.  The Griffins took the second set as well by a 25-15.  SHU closed out the match with a 25-20 victory.   With the victory, the Griffins improve to 16-5 overall and 5-3 in PSAC play. 
 
Slippery Rock jumped out to a 4-1 lead in the first set before kills from Kelsey Profio and Cassie Hausfeld trimmed the lead to 4-3.  A kill from Abigail Malsch gave the Griffins their first lead of the set at 9-8.  Neither team was able to take more than a one point lead throughout the early point of the set and the score was tied at 14 halfway thru.  Two aces from Hausfeld gave the Griffins a three point lead at 19-16.  SHU was able to take 3 of the next four points and led 22-17.  Courtney Field's ace gave the Griffins a set point and a SRU hitting error gave the Griffins a 25-17 first set victory. 
 
SHU jumped out to an early 8-3 lead in the second set.  The Rock answered with three straight to cut the lead to 8-6.  Corrine Gahagen's kill increased the Griffins lead to 11-8.  Lauren Teed's kill from the back increased the lead to 14-10 and a block by Shelby Kyllo increased the advantage to five.  Another Gahagen kill forced a Rock timeout at 17-12.  The Griffins pushed the lead to 22-15 late in the set.  Kyllo's kill gave the Griffins another set point at 24-15.  Kyllo then put the set away with another kill.
 
Gahagen started the third set off with a kill.  A Kyllo kill and a Gahagen ace extended the lead to 3-0.  Two consecutive blocks from Profio and Kyllo pushed the lead to 7-2.  The Rock battled back to tie the set at 8.  SHU then ran off three straight to lead 11-8.  The Rock tied the set at 15 after two Griffin errors.  The Rock took a 18-16 lead and forced a SHU timeout.  Three straight from the Griffins including a Chelsey Regovich kill gave the team the lead back at 19-18.  An ace by Katie Bloomgren continued the run at 22-18.  Two Rock points were answered by a Kyllo kill and SHu led 23-20.  Gahagen followed with a kill to give SHU match point.  Bloomgren closed out the match with a kill at 25-20.   
 
Cassie Hausfeld led the Griffins with 11 kills.  Shelby Kyllo added 10 and Corrine Gahagen followed with 9.  Courtney Field had 35 assists.  Lauren Teed led with 21 digs and Shelby Kyllo had 6 total blocks.
 
Seton Hill will conclude the weekend trip with a match at Edinboro on Saturday afternoon.
