Griffins Drop Second Straight With 56-50 Loss to UPJ

Box Score

Seton Hill dropped its second consecutive contest following a 56-50 home loss to Pitt Johnstown on Saturday afternoon.  UPJ outscored the Griffins 10-3 down the stretch to turn a 47-46 Griffin lead into a 56-50 UPJ victory.  Seton Hill falls to 10-7 overall and 7-4 in WVIAC play.  The loss drops the Griffins into fifth place in the WVIAC.

The Griffins started the game off slowly, hitting just one of their first 15 shots and finished the half shooting just 28% from the floor.  UPJ was able to make use of the Griffins poor shooting and took an 8-7 lead with 14:32 to play.  The Lady Cats were able to increase their lead to as many as 8 in the first half.  Paige Alviani's bucket with 57 seconds to play cut the lead to 27-25 but UPJ scored on their final possession to take a 29-25 halftime lead.

Baskets from Alviani and Tiara Stossel tied the game at 29 early in the second half.  UPJ then scored the next 7 points before Mallory Sanner ended the UPJ run with a jumper from the corner.  UPJ continued to control the play and held a 43-37 lead with 10 minutes to play in the half.  At this point the Griffins made their final push.  An Alviani lay in started the 9-0 Griffin run.  Five points from Stossel sandwiched around a Katie Gattuso bucket gave SHU a 46-43 lead with 6:07 to play.  UPJ tied the score at 46 with 5:04 to play.  Gattuso hit one of two free throws with 3:51 to play to give SHU their final lead at 47-46.  From that point on it was the Kaitlynn Fratz show as she buried back to back three's and hit 4 free throws down the stretch to close out the Griffins.

Three Griffins shared game high points with 11.  Paige Alviani, Tiara Stossel and Meghan Mastroianni each tossed in 11.  Alviani added 5 assists and 2 steals.  Katie Gattuso's streak of double doubles ended as she finished with 9 points and 14 rebounds on 3-19 shooting from the floor.  Clare Berenato added 10 rebounds.

Seton Hill will look to get back on track and Monday when they travel to Charleston.  Tip is set for 5:30 PM.
