Huge First Half Carries Griffins to 82-71 Victory

The Griffin women made the long trip to Bluefield, WV to take on the Lady Blues in WVIAC action on Saturday afternoon.  Seton Hill closed out the first half on a 17-4 run and cruised to an 82-71 victory.  The Griffins improve to 10-5 overall and 7-2 in WVIAC play. 
 
Seton Hill jumped out to a quick 6-1 lead on three points from Katie Gattuso and a three point bucket from Paige Alviani.  Bluefield was able to cut the lead to 7-5 before Alviani hit another three to push the lead back to five at the 16:23 mark.   A basket from Mallory Sanner and a three point play from Clare Berenato gave the Griffins their largest lead of the half at nine, 21-12 with 12:13 to play.  Both teams went on a little two minute scoring drought before Meghan Mastroianni broke the drought with a layin to give SHU a 26-15 lead.  Alviani followed with a bucket forcing a BSC timeout with the Griffins leading 28-15 with 7:31 to play in the first half.  Bluefield answered out of the time out with a bucket but it was all Griffins from that point on in the half.  A layin from Sanner pushed the lead back out to 17 with 4:42 to play.  Kelly Brennan then hit back to back three pointers with the second being a four point play to push the lead to 41-19 with just over three minutes to play in the half.  SHU closed the half on a 17-4 run to take a 45-21 lead into the break.
 
Bluefield State started out the half on a 12-7 run to cut the lead to 52-33 with just over 15 minutes to play.  Three points from Sanner and two free throws from Alviani pushed the lead back to 22 at 57-35.  Bluefield then went on a 6-0 run forcing a Griffin timeout with 12:08 to play and SHU leading 57-41.  BSC scored three more before Brennan ended the run with a foul line jumper to make it 59-44 with just over ten minutes to play.  Alviani drained another three to give the Griffins a 65-51 lead with 8:35 to play.  Bluefield State hit back to back threes to cut the lead to 76-68 with 1:28 to play.  Seton Hill was able to close out the game at the free throw line for the 82-71 victory. 
 
Katie Gattuso again led the Griffins with another double double including a game high 24 points and 17 rebounds.  Its her 7th double double in a row and 11th overall.  Paige Alviani followed with 19 points.  She added 5 assists and 5 rebounds.  Clare Berenato tossed in 11.  Kelly Brennan added 11 and Mallory Sanner tossed in 7 off the bench. 
 
The Griffins will be off until Thursday when they travel to Shepherd to battle the Rams.  Tip is set for 5:30 PM.
