Box Score Seton Hill opened WVIAC Tournament play with a match up with the number seven seed WV State on Thursday afternoon in the Eddie King Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Charleston. The Griffins came back from a rough second set to win the match 3-1. Seton Hill improves to 21-11 overall.
West Virginia State jumped out to a quick 5-3 lead in the first set. SHU came back to tie the set at five.
Chelsey Regovich recorded an ace to tie the match at seven. WV State recorded back to back blocks to take an 11-8 lead.
Shelby Kyllo recorded a kill to cut the State lead to 13-11. Kyllo and
Christina Donahoe then combined on a block and
Katie Bloomgren's ace tied the set at 13. A State hitting error gave the Griffins their first lead of the set at 14-13. Another Bloomgren ace increased the lead to 15-13. Donahoe followed with a solo block and the SHU run continued. Another ace from Bloomgren and SHU led 17-13.
Kelsey Profio's kill gave the Griffins a 19-15 lead. WV State scored two in a row and forced a SHU timeout. A State ball handling error increased the SHU lead to 20-18.
Corrine Gahagen pounded one to the floor giving the Griffins a 22-18 lead and causing State to call their last timeout. Gahagen and Kyllo combined on a block and SHU led 23-18. A State service error gave the Griffins set point.
Abigail Malsch ended the set with a kill and SHU won the first set 25-20.
Seton Hill took an early 4-3 lead in the second set. Kyllo gave the Griffins a 6-3 lead with a kill. Field sent one over on two and SHU led 7-3 and forced a State timeout. Three Bloomgren aces increased the lead to 11-3. Seton Hill completed their 11-0 run with a 14-3 lead. State answered with a 4-0 run of their own forcing a SHU timeout. A Kyllo kill ended the State run and SHU led 15-10. State scored four in a row and forced the second SHU timeout at 15-14. State completed their comeback and took a 16-15 lead. A Griffin block tied the set at 17. Gahagen tied the set at 18 with a kill. Another Gahagen kill tied the set at 19. Kyllo gave the Griffins a 21-20 lead. State ran off two in a row for a 22-21 lead. An ace increased the lead to 23-21. Kyllo cut the lead to one. A ball handling error gave State set point. Kyllo kept the Griffins alive with a kill. Gahagen tied the set at 24 with a kill. The set continued tied at 25. A SHU hitting error gave State another set point. A net violation gave State the set 27-25.
Seton Hill jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the third set. Kyllo added another kill to make the score 7-3. SHU increased the lead to 9-4. Malsch gives the Griffins an 11-5 lead. A service error by State increased the SHU lead to 13-7. Kyllo and Field combined on a block and SHU led 15-8. State went on a 3-0 run to cut the lead to 16-13 and coach Hall called a timeout. Gahagen ended the State run with a kill and SHU led 17-15. Gahagen and Profio blocked a State attempt to increase the lead to three. Gahagen began to heat up with another kill and increase the lead back to three. A Profio ace gave SHU a 20-16 lead and State called a timeout. Gahagen and
Larissa Santangelo blocked an attempt and SHU led 21-16. State answered with 4 in a row and SHU called their final timeout. Gahagen ended the run with a kill and SHU led 22-21. A Gahagen ace extended the lead to two at 23-21. Santangelo sent down an overpass and SHU had set point at 24-21. Kyllo ended the set with a kill and SHU goes up 2-1 with a 25-23 set win.
A Gahagen ace gives SHU a quick 3-0 lead in the fourth set. She followed it with another to lead 4-0. The Griffins increased the lead to 7-1 forcing a State timeout. A State back row block increased the lead to 8-1 and Malsch followed with an ace to make it 9-1. Kyllo killed an overpass to make it 10-1. Kyllo continued her stellar play with another kill to give SHU an 11-2 lead. She combined with Field to make it 12-2. Donahoe made it 14-2 with a kill.
Lauren Teed's ace made the score 16-4. A State hitting error made it 17-5 and State called their final timeout. Field followed with a kill and it was 18-5. A Regovich ace made it 19-5. Gahagen put the Griffins within 5 points of the semi's with a kill. State made a little run to cut the lead to 22-11. Santangelo got the Griffins to within two points at 23-11. Kyllo gave the Griffins a match point at 24-12 and she ended the match with a block.
Shelby Kyllo was spectacular with 18 kills.
Corrine Gahagen added 9.
Courtney Field led with 27 assists.
Lauren Teed racked up 24 digs and Kyllo led with 7 blocks.
Seton Hill advances to the semifinals where they will meet the winner of the Alderson Broaddus/Charleston match at 4:30 on Friday.
