In a game that featured 27 penalties, 231 penalty yards and two ejections, the Griffins fell by the score of 41-29 to West Liberty on Saturday afternoon at Offutt Field. An undisciplined Griffin squad accounted for 12 of the penalties including 8 personal fouls or unsportsmanlike penalties. West Liberty accounted for the other 15 penalties with only 4 being personal fouls or unsportsmanlike penalties. With the loss, the Griffins remain winless on the season at 0-9 overall and winless in WVIAC play at 0-7.
West Liberty took a 7-0 lead on a 45 yard interception return with 11:15 left in the first quarter. They added to their lead with a 23 yard field goal with 5:46 left in the first quarter. Seton Hill responded with a 13 play, 88 yard drive that ended with a 6 yard touchdown pass from Andrew Jackson to Mike Allento cut the lead to 10-7. West Liberty then went 56 yards in 10 plays to increase the lead back to 10 at 17-7 with 8:51 left in the first half.
Josh Cavalier ended the first half scoring with a 22 yard field goal and the Griffins went into the locker room trailing 17-10.
West Liberty scored the first touchdown of the second half on a 15 yard TD pass to entend the lead to 24-10. Two plays later, Jackson found
Niko Hall-Brown with a 75 yard bomb to cut the lead to 24-16. Cavalier's PAT attempt was blocked. WLU scored the final 10 points of the third quarter and led 34-16 after three quarters of play. Jackson then found
DJ Carter early in the fourth quarter with a 7 yard TD pass and SHU trailed 34-23 with 12:16 to go in the contest. The next three Griffin possessions ended with interceptions, the third one was returned for a touchdown with 1:27 left in the game. SHU closed out the scoring with a 22 yard TD pass from Jackson to
Trae Cook to cut the lead to 41-29 with 28 seconds left in the contest. The Griffins tried an onside kick which WLU recovered and after the play a fight broke out on the field with players leaving both benches causing both team's to be hit with personal foul penalties and one West Liberty player was ejected from the contest. An ugly ending to a penalty filled contest.
Seton Hill held an advantage in most of the offensive categories. The Griffins outgained West Liberty, 488-317 and had 19 first downs to WLU's 17. Andrew Jackson was 34-53 for 439 yards and 4TD's.
Niko Hall-Brown set a new Seton Hill single game record with 223 receiving yards on 11 catches. He also added a touchdown.
Tyler Zimmer led the defense with 14 total tackles including 11 solo.
Seton Hill will close out the home portion of their schedule next weekend when they host Saint Anselm in a non conference contest. Kickoff is set for noon on Saturday.
