Griffins Roll to 3-0 Victory over UPJ

Box Score The Griffins got back into the winning ways on the volleyball court with a 3-0 home victory over Pitt Johnstown on Wednesday night.  With the win the Griffins improve to 8-10 overall and 3-2 in WVIAC play.  Seton Hill took the first set 25-22, the second set 25-21 and closed out the Mountain Cats with a 25-22 win in the third set.

Seton Hill took their first lead of the first set following an Abigail Malsch kill and a Malsch/Corrine Gahagen block at 8-6.  A Gahagen kill forced an UPJ timeout with the Griffins leading 15-11.  Later in the set, UPJ went on a 5-0 run to take a 20-19 lead.  A Shelby Kyllo/Larissa Santangelo block gave the Griffins the lead for good at 21-20.  Christina Donahoe ended the set with a kill, giving the Griffins a 25-22 victory.

Seton Hill led throughout the second set.  Malsch had a kill to give the Griffins their largest lead of the set at 18-14.  Gahagen had back to back kills to send the Griffins to match point at 24-20.  Malsch then closed out the set with a kill and the Griffins won the second set 25-21.  UPJ led throughout most of the third set.  A Malsch kill tied the set at 11.  UPJ then led 21-17 forcing the Griffins to take their final timeout.  Seton Hill responded by scoring the next 6 points, including one off a Alexis Cerminara ace.  Gahagen and Kelsey Profio teamed for a block to give the Griffins a match point and Gahagen closed it out with a kill at 25-22.

Abigail Malsch led the Griffins with 11 kills.  Corrine Gahagen was right behind with 10.  Courtney Field had 19 assists and Kelsey Profio added 10.  Lauren Teed had a game high 19 digs, Malsch added 17 and Katie Bloomgren tossed in 14.  Shelby Kyllo led the squad with 2 solo and 3 block assists.

Seton Hill will host Pitt Greensburg on Friday evening at 7 PM.
