Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Season Ends with 5-3 Loss at NCAA Atlantic Regional

It's often said the little things matter the most and at an NCAA regional with seven good baseball teams, the little things even matter more.  At this NCAA Regional, the Griffins did not do any of the little things on the bases, at the plate or in the field and it cost them as they went two and BBQ following a 5-3 loss in an elimination game with Winston Salem on Friday afternoon at Russell Diethrick Park in Jamestown, NY.  SHU closes out the season with a 36-20 record.

Winston Salem State took advantage of a pop up that should have been caught that turned into a double and took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning.  The Rams added three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to extend their lead to 4-0.

The Griffins finally broke thru in the third inning.  Austin Braendel broke a streak of seven straight Griffin strikeouts as he was hit by a pitch with two outs.  Craig Lewis reached on a bunt base hit and Braendel scored when Tyler Sullivan reached on an error.

The Rams added another unearned run in the bottom of the fourth inning.  They had runners on second and third with no outs.  Perry Dellavalle was able to get two outs but an error on a ground ball allowed the run to score.

Ryan Wardropper led off the fifth with an infield single.  He moved to third on a Lewis double.  Wardropper scored on a Sullivan single to cut the lead to 5-2 but a ground out and fly out ended the inning, leaving runners on second and third.  Mark Colella hit a leadoff homer to start the sixth inning and cut the Rams lead to 5-3.

Perry Dellavalle was the hard luck loser as he pitched better than his numbers showed as his defense did not make enough plays in the contest.  He worked 6.1 innings, giving up 4 earned runs on 9 hits while striking out three.

Craig Lewis closed out a stellar freshman campaign with 3 hits.  MP Buckley closed the season with a two hit game.
