Dominating Second Half Lifts SHU Past Gannon, 71-65

GREENSBURG, Pa. - After shooting just 24.1% in the first half, Seton Hill scored 52 points in the second to rally past Gannon University, 71-65, in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference men's basketball action Saturday afternoon inside of the McKenna Center.

Seton Hill finishes the week with two wins and now sits at 10-11 overall and 7-10 in the PSAC. Gannon slips to 14-7 overall and 12-5 in the conference.

Following a dismal first half that saw Gannon dominate the Griffins on their way to a 36-19 lead at the break, Seton Hill started off the second half on an 11-0 run over the first three minutes.  Noah Davis got the momentum going with a layup just 15 seconds into the half. Nathan Davis followed with a three off of a turnover, and Noah turned a Gannon missed shot into a layup on the other end. Noah struck again with a layup to cut the lead to single digits, 36-28, for the first time since midway through the first frame. Nathan's layup off of turnover put SHU to within 6, 36-30, with 17:21 on the clock.

After Gannon pushed the lead back to 11, 42-31, with 15:47 on the clock, Seton Hill would outscore Gannon, 24-12, over the next 10 minutes to save their first lead of the contest.  Noah Davis got four poitns on back-to-back trips to the foul line. After a Gannon layup, Seton Hill grabbed four more points on a jumper by Nathan Davis and a layup from Fernando Salsamendi to make it 44-39 with 12:03 remaining. Gannon responded with a jumper by Jimmer Berger, but Salsamendi answered with two free-throws. After trading points, Noah Davis' layup cut the lead to just 3, 50-47, with 9:24 to go.

Fast forward through a few minutes of tough defensive efforts, Gannon's Joe Fustine broke the scorelessness with two free-throws. However, Noah Davis hit three's on consecutive possessions to cut the deficit to just 1, 54-53. Nathan's layup gave Seton Hill their first lead of the game, 55-54, with 6:24 to go in the game, and Spencer Casson's thunderous dunk after a Gannon missed shot made sure the Griffins had all of the momentum. SHU would hold off the Golden Knights the rest of the way en route to their 71-65 win.

Nathan Davis led all scorers with 28 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including 5-8 from long-range. Noah Davis came away with 23 points on 7-of-12 from the floor. Both Davis brothers did their damage in the second half as the two combined for 41 of the 52 points scored in the second frame. Nathan led the rebounding effort for Seton Hill, grabbing 10 boards. Fernando Salsamendi had 7 points, while Spence Casson had 6 points. Casson grabbed 8 rebounds and had a game-high 10 blocks.

For the game, Seton Hill made 24 of 57 (42.1%) shots. The team was 8-for-18 from three and made 15 of their 24 free-throw attempts. The Griffins scored 28 points in the paint, 13 off of turnovers, and got 7 points off of the bench.

Matthew Dogan led the Gannon offensive effort with 19 points. Zay Jackson had 13, Jimmy Berger scored 11, and Damon Miraud had the games only double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Berger dished 5 assists. Gannno outrebounded Seton Hill, 45-36.

Gannon hit on 24 of their 66 shot attempts, including 7 of 18 from long-distance. The Golden Knights were 10-of-13 from the line. Gannon scored 30 poitns in the paint, 14 off of turnovers, 13 second chance points, and their bench added 8 points in the loss.

Seton Hill returns to action on Wednesday, February 8th when they travel to Edinboro, Pa. to take on Edinboro University. That game is set to tip-off at 7:30 PM.
