SHU Falls In First Round of PSAC Tournament

JOHNSTOWN, Pa. - The Seton Hill University men's basketball team fell to the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown, 112-53, Monday evening inside the UPJ Sports Center on the campus of Pitt-Johnstown in the first round of the 2017 PSAC Men's Basketball Tournament. 

The loss ends the Griffins' season with a record of 11-16 overall (8-14 PSAC). UPJ, who improved to 19-10 overall, advances to play second-seeded Gannon University in the second round of the PSAC Tournament on Wednesday. 

Pitt-Johnstown started off the game with a 23-2 run as Seton Hill struggled to find a rhythm on the offensive and defensive aspects of the game. The Griffins would go on to make just 11 of 31 shots (35.5%) in the first half while UPJ finished the first frame going 25-for-40 (62.5%) from the floor. 

The second half saw much of the same with the homestanding Mountain Cats pushing the lead out to 42 (74-32) by the first media timeout with 14:45 to go in the game. That trend would continue as the Mountain Cats kept tight control of the game on their way to the 112-53 final. 

Manny Joshua led the SHU offense with 12 points on 5-of-9 shooting, including a three. Matt Kline scored seven, while Trevor Lecuona and Anthony Karabotsos added six apiece. UPJ's Isaac Vescovi led six Mountain Cats in double-digit scoring with a game-high 24 points. Dale Clancy had 18, Levi Masua had a double-double 15 points and 10 rebounds, AJ Leahey chipped in 14, Jake Laravie came away with 11, and Roman Sebastiani came through with 10 points.

For the game, Seton Hill was 22-for-62 (35.5%) from the field, including 6-of-23 (26.1%) from three. UPJ made 46-of-83 (55.4%) total shots, 15 of those shots coming from long-range.
