Seton Hill wrapped up their regular season with a home matchup against Pitt Johnstown on Wednesday evening. The Griffins pulled away from the Lady Cats in the second quarter in route to a 82-66 victory. With the win the Griffins clinch the fifth seed out of the west for the PSAC postseason. SHU finished the regular season with a 16-12 overall record and a 12-10 mark in PSAC play.
The Griffins first round opponent is yet to be determined but will either be Edinboro or Mercyhurst on the road on Monday evening. Both Edinboro and Mercyhurst are tied with 16-5 records. Mercyhurst plays Gannon on Saturday while Edinboro takes on Clarion.
The first five minutes of the contest were played very tightly with the game tied four times including 9-9 with 5:31 to play in the quarter. The Griffins built their lead to 13-10 on a basket from
Alexandra Hay then extended it to 18-12 with 1:20 to play in the quarter on a three from
Mariah Wells and a layup from
Lexi Civittolo. SHU took an 18-15 lead into the second quarter.
SHU opened the second quarter on a 13-2 run thanks to three point shooting.
Alexandria Deep opened the scoring with back to back baskets. The Griffins then drilled three three pointers, one each from Wells,
Maggie McLoughlin and
Kinross Obiefule to push the lead to 31-17 with 6:34 left in the half. Deep and
Halie Torris drained back to back threes to push the lead to 15 at 37-22 with 2:31 to go in the second. Seton Hill held a 40-28 advantage at the halftime break.
Pitt Johnstown got to within nine points early in the third quarter but the Griffins went on a 7-0 run to build the lead back up to 49-33 midway thru the third quarter. A three pointer from Torris gave the Griffins their largest lead to date at 19, 56-37 with 2:27 to play in the quarter. The Griffins carried a 58-42 lead into the fourth quarter.
SHU built their lead up to as many as 18 points in the fourth with the lead never shrinking below 12 points in the quarter.
The Griffins finished the contest shooting 50% from the field and 41% from three point land while holding the Lady Cats to 38% from the floor. SHU held a 48-29 advantage in rebounds.
Mariah Wells led the Griffins with 16 points and 7 rebounds.
Jenna Kaufman added 11 points and 6 rebounds.
Alexandra Hay also finished the contest with 11 points.
Halie Torris was the other Griffin in double figures with 10 points.
Chrisanna Green nearly missed another double double with 9 points and 11 rebounds.
SHU will return to the court on Monday in the first round of the PSAC Tournament. The Griffins will be on the road with the site and time to be announced on Saturday evening after the completion of the league schedule.
