PSAC East Co-Pitcher of the Year Matt Festa silenced the Griffin bats in game one of the PSAC Tournament as the Griffins only managed five hits in a 5-2 loss to East Stroudsburg. Seton Hill had runners in scoring position in five innings but only managed to score one of those runners. SHU drops to 36-15 overall while ESU improves to 36-14.
Both teams stranded a runner at second in the first inning.
Chris Miller singled after one out but two groundouts ended the SHU threat in the first. East Stroudsburg scored a run in the top of the second inning on three hits to take a 1-0 lead over the Griffins.
Seton Hill tied the score at one in the bottom of the third inning. After an out,
Garret Vrbanic was hit by a pitch. He stole second and scored when
Matt Malacane doubled to the left center field gap.
East Stroudsburg took the lead with three runs in the top of the fifth inning. The Warriors opened the inning with four straight hits to score the three runs.
The Griffins threatened in the eighth inning. Vrbanic reached on an error after striking out to start the ninth. Malacane followed with a single putting runners on first and second with no one out. ESU ace Matt Festa was then able to get the 2-3-4 hitters out in order to end the threat. The last two on strikeouts.
The Warriors added an insurance run in the top of the ninth. They used a leadoff single, a sacrifice bunt and two wild pitches to add the run. SHU got the final run of the game in the bottom of the ninth on a solo homer from
Colton Carney.
Perry DellaValle suffered his first loss of the season. He went 8 innings, giving up 4 runs on 10 hits while striking out 5.
Matt Malacane was the lone Griffin with two hits in the game.
Seton Hill will look to keep their PSAC title hopes alive on Monday when they take on the loser of the Millersville/California game at 9:30 AM.
